Simple solutions that prevent laundry mishaps, gentle styling tips to reduce hair loss, and more. July 14, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! If there’s a trip to IKEA in your future, or there was one in your recent past, Today’s Good Thing is ripe with inspiring ideas that can help you take your furniture to the next level. I’ve got a new Poll of the Week for you too, but it may require some serious self-reflection. Choosing a favorite summertime treat is not for the faint of heart! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Upgrade Budget-Friendly Basics With IKEA Hacks [Top left: Bookshelves. Top right: Wrapping paper sorters. Bottom left: Ribbon organizer. Bottom right: Plant cart.]( Get your budget-friendly furniture at IKEA, then use your creativity to make it one of a kind. You just can’t beat IKEA when it comes to affordable furnishings, and I’ll happily assemble flat-pack furniture all day long to save money. But the affordability factor can also be a drawback if you want your home to look unique, because a lot of us probably have the same coffee tables, nightstands, and chairs we all got at IKEA. But there’s a way to have your cake and eat it too, by which I mean you can have affordable furniture without sacrificing unique design. All you need is some creativity, resourcefulness, and a can-do attitude—and a good step-by-step tutorial doesn’t hurt either! I’m talking about the wide world of IKEA hacks, a popular practice among DIYers. You take affordable items from IKEA and reimagine them, which can involve anything from a simple spray paint makeover to altering something to give it an entirely new function. I gathered up 14 amazingly creative IKEA hacks from around the web to demonstrate the ways resourceful DIYers are turning affordable pieces into unique, stylish, and functional decor. Follow the link below to check out the projects, then use them as inspiration to start dreaming up your very own IKEA hacks! As dirty clothes accumulate in your hamper throughout the week (or on the floor, or that one chair...), a lot can be forgotten! From stains you meant to pre-treat to chapstick or headphones in pockets, it's all too easy to forget the details and toss it all in the wash, with consequences ranging from mild annoyance to total destruction. Luckily, clever OGT readers have their own ideas for avoiding the same unfortunate fate. Dee, for instance, shared an elegant solution for remembering to pretreat stains: “I have my husband tie the sleeves of his dress shirts in a knot if there is a stain on it. Then I know to look for it before throwing it into the washer!” Erin has a smart and simple system for checking pockets: “Whenever a pair of pants goes into the hamper, I check all the pockets and then zip the fly.” So when it's time to put things in the washer, she knows that pants with the zipper up are good to go, but if the zipper is down, she knows to double-check for safety's sake. BEAUTY 7 Easy Ways To Be Gentle To Your Hair [Jillee looking in a mirror and tucking her hair behind her ear.]( Minimize hair loss and hair fall by doing these 7 simple things that are gentle on hair. 1. Low Or No Heat. Set your hair dryer on cool and low settings, and minimize your use of flat irons and other heat tools. 2. Dye Gradually. Don’t dye your hair more than one or two shades lighter or darker in one sitting to minimize chemical damage. 3. Brush Then Spray. If you use hair gel or hair spray, brush your hair before applying products to avoid breakage. 4. Comb Wet Hair. When your hair is wet, use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush and comb it lightly to avoid pulling and tugging. 5. Use Tools Sparingly. Avoid unnecessary brushing, combing, curling, or straightening, which can weaken hair at the root level. 6. No Hot Showers. Avoid taking hot showers that sap your hair and scalp of natural oils and make hair dry and brittle. 7. Use Mild Shampoo. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo, as harsh formulas can make hair more prone to breakage. JILLEE'S PICK Invaluable Vacuum Sealers [Two packages of steaks, the left one is in a ziplock bag and looks freezer burned, and the right one is vacuum sealed and shows no signs of freezer burn.]( Many people view vacuum sealers as an unnecessary luxury or something that "regular people" don't need, but I couldn't disagree more. Anyone and everyone can benefit from a vacuum sealer because they make it effortless to stock up, save money, and cut back on food waste. The biggest advantage of vacuum-sealed frozen foods is that they last a lot longer than they would in standard freezer bags. For example, frozen beef can stay fresh for about 6 months in a freezer bag, whereas vacuum-sealed beef stays fresh for 2 to 3 years. When your frozen food never goes to waste, you'll waste less money too. Vacuum sealing can work for short-term freezer storage too, especially if you use a bag that’s longer than necessary. I like to freeze things like pre-portioned cookie dough, or frozen cubes of lemon juice in long bags. When I take some out, I cut the bag open just below the seal, take out what I need, then reseal the bag and return it to the freezer. I’ve had a couple of different [FoodSaver vacuum sealers]( that I’ve really liked, and Britta has one from [Anova]( that she likes just as well. If you don’t own a vacuum sealer yet, give one a try and experience the game-changing benefits for yourself. [See my favorite vacuum sealers on Amazon](.
