Scan documents and images with your smartphone, a cleaner way to melt butter, and more. July 13, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Today’s newsletter is all over the place, but in a good way. Skincare? Check. Technology? Of course—it’s Tech Tip Tuesday, after all. A lengthy ode to my love of toast? You bet. If it’s been as hot where you live as it has been here, stay cool today, and make sure to stay hydrated too! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Best Natural Oils For Mature Skin [Left: A bottle of rosehip oil. Top right: Geranium essential oil being added to a brown bottle. Bottom right: Lavender essential oil being added to a small jar of lotion.]( Support the health and vitality of aging skin with these powerhouses of the plant kingdom. 1. Geranium Essential Oil. Dropping estrogen levels before and during menopause can create dramatic changes in your skin, but [geranium essential oil]( can help mitigate those effects. Research suggests that geranium oil can help reduce inflammation, and that it has an antioxidant effect for fighting free radicals. 2. Rosehip Oil. [Rosehip oil]( is a great carrier oil for delicate and sensitive skin, both because it’s full of nourishing vitamins and fatty acids and because it absorbs into skin quickly. Research suggests rosehip oil can help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and improve both moisture levels and skin elasticity. 3. Lavender Essential Oil. I could write sonnets on the usefulness of [lavender essential oil]( (or at least one [blog post](. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties that make it useful for soothing eczema, acne, dry skin, and other skin irritations, and it helps reduce inflammation too. Storing recipes, owners manuals, forms, and other documents on your phone keeps them conveniently at your fingertips whenever you need them. And for iPhone users, the Notes app makes it quick and easy to scan and save them. Here’s how to do it: 1. Open Notes, create a new note, then select the camera icon above the keyboard. 2. Select Scan Documents and position whatever you want to scan within the frame displayed on the screen. (It will automatically scan, crop, and adjust the image, but you can always make further adjustments if needed.) 3. When you’re happy with the scan, hit Keep Scan and Save to finish. You can organize your scanned documents into different folders of your choosing within the Notes app, and even lock the ones with sensitive information in them so they can only be accessed with a password of your choosing. Give this useful feature a try! Butter is one of those things that seems determined to snap, crackle, and pop all over the interior of your microwave. Suddenly, zapping the butter in your microwave instead of melting it on your stovetop no longer seems quite as smart a shortcut as it once did! Luckily, there’s an easy way to melt butter in your microwave without making such a mess. Just set the empty butter wrapper over the top of the dish before you put it in the microwave! (And as an added bonus, you can save those butter wrappers in a ziplock bag in your freezer and use them to grease baking dishes down the road.) JILLEE'S PICK Get Thee To Guernsey [The front cover of ]( I have read a lot of books about World War II at this point, but [The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer]( was by far the most lovely. This book has such a unique perspective that it would have still felt fresh and intriguing even if I’d read a hundred WWII novels. The book is composed of a series of letters that tell the story of a writer who, after learning of the titular society in Guernsey, becomes involved in their lives in hopes of writing about them. Through the glimpses revealed in each letter, Shaffer’s characters became so real that I found myself wishing I could meet them in person. I found the details of the character’s experiences very moving as well, and not just because they were hard, but because the people were so brave. It’s hard not to be inspired by their endurance in the face of hardship, and the love they held for each other. While I haven't seen [Netflix's 2018 movie adaptation]( yet, it's on my list! (My daughter-in-law Kaitlyn says it follows the book quite closely, which is usually a good thing for movies based on books.) [See The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on Amazon](. WHAT IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB A Toast To Toast, My Favorite Breakfast [An image of a laptop computer displaying a Pinterest page bearing a collection of toast recipes.]( When I say that I’m a big fan of toast, I mean it. I could eat toast every day forever and I don’t think I would ever get sick of it. From plain buttered toast to elaborate open-faced toast/sandwich hybrids, I’ve never met a piece of toast I didn’t like. So imagine my delight upon discovering [this collection of next-level toast recipes on Pinterest](. There’s a little bit of everything here, toast-wise: toad-in-the-hole, classic avocado toast, and even a mouthwatering croque madame (which is mysteriously topped with an egg yolk rather than a whole egg, but who am I to judge?) If you’ve been looking to mix up your breakfast or lunch rotation, check out some of these tasty toasts for inspiration. And if you have a favorite toast recipe of your own, you know where to send it. A FEW MORE THINGS... Donate Blood: [According to the American Red Cross]( we’re in the midst of a nationwide blood shortage and donors are needed now more than ever.
