How to get telemarketers to stop calling you, a printable guide to food amounts for parties, and more. July 6, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! If it feels like every single call you receive is a telemarketer, robocall, or something similarly fishy, today’s Tech Tip Tuesday can help you shore up the defenses of your telecommunications. I’ve also got a free printable for you in today’s newsletter, which should prove very useful for anyone who’s ever planned a party or get-together and asked themselves, “How much food do I need?” Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Dishwasher Tips You Ought To Know [Left: A dish of vinegar in the top rack of a dishwasher. Top right: The top rack filled with loofahs, a scrub brush, a pencil cup, and a sponge. Bottom right: Cutlery in a dishwasher arranged so the forks, spoons, and knives are separate.]( These tips, tricks, and useful facts about dishwashers aren't widely known, but they should be! 1. Vinegar Can Prevent Water Spots. My little secret for ensuring sparkling, spot-free dishes is adding white vinegar to every load. I just pour about half a cup of vinegar into a small dish and set it in the center of the top rack, and it dramatically cuts down on the amount of hard water spots that get left behind. 2. Keep Your Kitchen Cleaner. When you’re doing something that could make a mess of your kitchen, like spraying cooking spray into a pan or measuring out spices or powders, do it over your open dishwasher door. The door will catch the mess and get washed clean when you run your next load of dishes. 3. Clean More Than Dishes. You can use your dishwasher to clean more than just dishes. On the top rack of your dishwasher, you can wash silk flowers, baseball caps, small toys, flip flops, light fixture covers, vacuum attachments, hairbrushes, gardening tools, and more. 4. Load It The Right Way. The user manuals that come with dishwashers often contain a diagram that shows the best way to load dishes into it. In addition to being useful information to know, it may help settle any ongoing arguments about the best way to load the dishwasher! 5. It Needs To Be Cleaned. Food residues can build up in the inner workings of your dishwasher over time and may eventually worsen its performance. The Federal Trade Commission operates a National Do Not Call Registry, which exists to inform sales companies and telemarketers that the owners of registered phone numbers do not want to receive telemarketing calls. While there are plenty of scammers and spammers who will happily ignore the Registry, getting less unwanted calls by any margin is still a net gain. So while you shouldn't expect registering to stop all the unwanted calls you’ve been receiving, it’s so quick and easy that it’s a no-brainer as a first step. It's free to register your home or mobile phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. [Add your number to the Do Not Call Registry here](. COOKING Feeding A Crowd? You Need This Guide [Someone writing notes while consulting a printed copy of the ]( Use this printable to avoid going way overboard on food (or worse, not having enough!) Whether I’m planning a family function, church party, or work event, there’s always one question that plagues me: “How much food do I need?” I’m used to feeding a crowd of 6-foot giants with appetites to match (AKA my husband and kids), which means I tend to vastly overestimate the amount of food the average person will eat. That means that I’m usually left with way too much uneaten food. And while leftovers aren’t necessarily a bad thing, I certainly don’t need the temptation of taking home dozens of uneaten cookies at the end of the night. In order to improve my food estimating skills, I put together a printable guide we can all benefit from having on hand. In my “How Much Food?” guide, you’ll find recommendations for how much food to plan for based on what kind of foods you’re serving and how many guests you’ll have. Use the button below to download the PDF, then print it out and keep it in your kitchen or office for easy reference. (As it turns out, the book had very little to do with horses, so that one’s on me.) But [The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons]( kept cropping up on many of the lists of recommended books I've been looking at. After seeing how many people loved this book, I decided I would give it a try despite my misgivings, and I'm exceedingly glad I did! Set in the Soviet Union during World War II, the story centers on Tatiana, a girl living with her family in Leningrad, and Alexander, a strong and mysterious officer in the Red Army. Tatiana and Alexander's gripping love story is so beautifully told that once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I gave it a 5-star rating on [Goodreads]( but I would have given it 500 stars if I could have. And while I haven't read the sequels yet (because frankly I was emotionally spent after finishing the first one), I definitely plan to read Tatiana and Alexander (#2) and The Summer Garden (#3) in short order! [See the Bronze Horseman Trilogy on Amazon](. WHAT IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB Gardens On The Go [Six Instagram images of plants inside people's cars]( Hold onto your hats folks, because this internet trend is a doozy: cardening (a portmanteau of “car” + “gardening”). It has been trending on Instagram for several months now, and apparently the main interpretation of the concept involves filling a divot in your dashboard with a miniature succulent garden. Maybe it’s just because we’re in that stretch of the summer when the inside of my car always seems to be over 100°F, but how is anyone keeping these plants alive? (Or are they? Maybe it’s just one of those things people do for the sole purpose of taking a picture for Instagram?) It does appear that some people are taking a slightly more reasonable approach to cardening [by using faux plants]( but it seems like it would take just as much effort to set up a fake garden as it would a real one. But you know what they say—different strokes for different folks! A FEW MORE THINGS... Happy Birthday: Today is the birthday of a surprising number of prominent figures, including Frida Kahlo (1907), Nancy Reagan (1921), Tenzin Gyatso (the current Dalai Lama, 1935), Sylvester Stallone (1946), and George W. Bush (1946), just to name a few. If it's your birthday, a very happy birthday to you too! Do Something Good: Take the opportunity to text (or call, or however you prefer to communicate) someone close to you that you haven’t spoken with in a while. The simple act of letting someone know you’ve been thinking about them is sure to brighten their day. What did you think of today's email?
