Freshen up your mattress this weekend, save money with careful timing, and more. June 25, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! TGIF, right? As you hammer out your weekend plans, consider setting aside an hour or two to complete today’s Weekend Cleaning Challenge. When you finish, you’ll be able to rest easy knowing your mattress is fresh and clean. Also in today’s newsletter: a strategy for saving money that’s all about timing, my latest lunchtime food obsession, and a new Quiz Corner for you brainiacs. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Co-Wash For Controllable Curls [Left: Conditioner being dispensed into hands. Right: Conditioner being massaged into hair.]( For many with curly or wavy hair, this shampoo-free hair care method is a revelation. I had never heard of co-washing before our production manager Brittany happened to mention she was doing it. But once she explained what it was, I realized why it wasn’t ringing any bells—it’s mainly used by people with curly or wavy hair (ie. not me). Co-washing is short for “conditioner-only washing,” which is supposed to eliminate the unpleasantness of freshly shampooed hair. Instead, co-washed is more like second-day hair: clean, but softer, smoother, and easier to manage than after shampooing. If you’re interested in trying it for yourself, you can incorporate it into your routine as often as you want. Some people alternate between co-washing and shampooing, while others rely on co-washing alone, so play around to find out what works best for your hair. Here’s how it’s done: 1. Soak your hair with water to loosen debris and make the conditioner easier to rinse out later. 2. Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair and scalp, enough to coat your hair completely from root to tip. 3. Massage the conditioner into your scalp, then let it sit for 3-5 minutes. 4. Rinse, dry, and style your hair as usual. Right: A vacuum and dust brush being used to vacuum a mattress.]( This weekend, follow these steps to liberate your mattress from musty smells, dirt, and worse. Between body oils, dead skin, and the run-of-the-mill dirt we leave behind, it’s no wonder that mattresses can start to smell a bit musty after a while. But no longer, because this weekend’s cleaning challenge is all about cleaning and freshening up your mattress. It may sound a bit intimidating, but honestly, it couldn’t be easier to do. My preferred method uses baking soda to absorb moisture and odors from the surface of your mattress, essential oils for natural freshness, and your vacuum to make the cleanup quick and easy. Here’s how to do it: 1. Strip Your Mattress. Remove any blankets, sheets, mattress covers, memory foam toppers, and anything else covering your mattress. (And while it isn’t a necessary part of the mattress cleaning process, the fact that you have to remove all your bedding anyway gives you a good excuse to wash it!) 2. Apply Baking Soda. Add 1 cup of baking soda and 4-5 drops of essential oils (for freshness, if desired) to a jar and shake well to mix. (Double those amounts if you have a king-size mattress.) Apply the baking soda mixture in an even layer across the surface of your mattress, then let it sit there for at least an hour to absorb moisture and odors. 3. Vacuum It Up. Grab your vacuum cleaner and the upholstery attachment and use them to remove the baking soda mixture from your mattress. Do a quick once-over to pick up most of the baking soda, then go over it again in slow passes to lift out the remaining baking soda, dust mites, dead skin, etc. Are you up for this weekend's cleaning challenge? Bottom left: Jillee holding shopping bags. Right: Jillee picking out product at the grocery store.]( If you’re willing to be flexible, timing your purchases just right can yield serious savings. If you want to save money, never underestimate the power of timing. Planning your purchases to fall on the day of the week when prices will be at their lowest isn’t difficult, and even minor differences in pricing can add up to big savings for you in the long run. For example, Mondays are the best day for almost anything related to vehicles. Gas prices tend to rise throughout the week, so the earlier you fill your tank, the better. If you’re in the market for a new car, doing it on Monday can save you an average of 8%. Tuesdays are a great day to take the family out to eat or to plan a dinner-and-a-movie date because many places offer ticket discounts and meal deals that day. As for today, Fridays can be a great day to book hotels and other lodging for future trips. JILLEE'S PICK Vegetable Soup: It's What's For Lunch [Left: Vegetable soup in an Instant Pot. Right: Two bowls of vegetable soup.]( Unless I have a lunch meeting scheduled, I typically eat lunch at home. Sandwiches are always on the table as an option, but sometimes (well, actually a lot of the time) I'm really in the mood for soup. And thanks to my Instant Pot, I can improvise a delicious vegetable soup that comes together in less than 30 minutes, plus I have enough leftover soup for several more lunches. My soup recipe varies because I try to use whatever I have on hand, but [The Recipe Rebel’s Instant Pot Vegetable Soup]( has all the same basic ingredients. To make the prep even easier, I use my handy [Chef’n VeggiChop]( to make short work of all the veggies. What do you typically eat for lunch during the week? Reply to this email and let me know!
