A simple swap for better portion control, a bathroom binder clip hack, and more. June 24, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! I never anticipated that the solution would come from London’s finest tailors, but it seems they didn’t like it when their slacks slipped off hangers either. It’s always nice to discover something that unites people across geographic and socioeconomic divides. Another thing that unites people is a love of eating, but it can get some of us into trouble. Today’s Swap This For That offers a simple way to keep portions reasonable without feeling deprived. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Hanging Hack For Slippery Slacks [Left: Pant legs being held on either side of a hanger. Top right: One pant leg folded over the hanger. Bottom right: Pants hung using the Savile Row fold.]( To keep slacks from slipping off their hangers, follow the lead of London’s finest tailors. Some pairs of slacks can be extremely reluctant to stay on hangers, especially the ones that are on the silky end of the fabric spectrum. My husband Dave was dealing with this very issue a while back, and kept waking up to find one or more of his work slacks in a puddle on the closet floor. So I did some digging around and eventually came across a tip that solved the problem for good: [the Savile Row fold](. It’s named after the expert tailors of Savile Row in London who have been using the method for years to ensure slacks stay put on their hangers. Here’s how to do it in three easy steps: 1. Hold the slacks upside down with one pant leg in each hand and the legs straddling the bottom of a hanger. (I find it helpful to hang the hanger from a closet rod or laundry rack so that I have full use of both hands.) 2. Feed one pant leg through the hanger, then pull it down until the bottom of the pant leg is resting just above the crotch of the pants. 3. Then feed the second leg through the hanger so that lies over the top of the first leg. And finally, give the hanger a shake and admire your handiwork. Put A Binder Clip On Your Toothpaste [A partially used tube of toothpaste standing up on one end with the end rolled up and secured in place with a binder clip]( Many office supplies are just as useful outside the office as they are in it, including binder clips. Get the most out of every tube of toothpaste with the help of a binder clip. Just roll the end of the tube towards the opening to squeeze the remaining toothpaste forward, then secure the rolled end in place with a binder clip. Not only is a binder clip strong enough to hold the rolled section in place indefinitely, but it can be useful in other ways too. If the arms of the clip are closed against the tube, you can stand your toothpaste up on the flat end of the clip. If the arms of the clip are in the open position, you can hang the toothpaste from a small hook. Eating according to what your body needs sounds straightforward, but many people struggle to differentiate physical hunger and mental or emotional cravings. Many of us want to eat more than our bodies actually need, but doing so can lead to unwanted weight gain, or make things more difficult if you're already trying to lose weight. But on the bright side, simply slowing down at mealtimes can help keep your mind and body on the same page when it comes to hunger. And the easiest way to slow yourself down (because let’s face it, self-control is hard) is to swap your dinner plate for a smaller plate. It’s a simple and effective psychological trick, because a small plate just doesn't hold as much food as a dinner plate, even if you really load it up. But it still looks like a full plate of food, so you won’t feel as deprived as you might if you put the same food on a larger plate. JILLEE'S PICK Sleep Sounds For Sound Sleep [Left: a LectroFan noise machine on a nightstand. Right: Jillee sleeping next to the nightstand with the noise machine.]( In the past, my husband insisted on keeping a small fan running in our bedroom as a source of sleep-inducing “white noise.” I didn’t mind the sound of the fan, but what I did mind was how dusty the fan got and how impossible it was to clean. I ended up buying the [LectroFan noise machine]( after reading about the variety of different sounds it produced, and for its compact, easy-to-clean design. Dave took to it immediately, and once I discovered the “pink noise” setting, I was sold too! (Pink noise is like white noise, but it sounds more like steady rainfall than radio static.) While it’s more expensive than a bedroom fan, you can’t beat the LectroFan in terms of sound variety and quality. (Seriously, playing white noise from my phone pales in comparison.) If you’re like Dave and need noise to sleep peacefully, consider adding this noise machine to your sleep setup too. Ice packs will help keep your refrigerated and frozen foods cold on the way home, so no more melted ice cream. And it’s easy to carry it all to the fridge in the ice chest!" Considering how hot it’s been here lately, this tip couldn’t have come at a better time. There’s nothing worse than stocking up on frozen treats only to realize they’re already half melted when you get home. Thanks for sharing, Katherine! Have a great tip or trick of your own?
