An all-natural moth deterrent, the most flattering eyeshadows for mature skin, and more. June 23, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! While the pandemic certainly put a dent in cash-based spending, that doesn’t mean your jar of loose change is worthless. There are still plenty of ways you can use those coins, including the ones in today’s newsletter. I also have another book recommendation to share that’s just begging to be read at the pool or beach this summer, and don’t forget to weigh in on the latest Poll of the Week. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Smart Uses For Spare Change [Top left: Rolls of coins. Top right: A jar of coins in a laundry basket. Bottom left: Coins in a tip jar. Bottom right: Jillee using self checkout.]( Break open your piggy bank and check under the cushions—it’s time to put those coins to work. 1. Take It To A Coin Machine. Coin counting machines like Coinstar can be found in many grocery stores, or some smaller banks and credit unions have them and will let you use them for free. Coinstar charges an 11% commission fee if you want cash, but there’s no fee to put it on a gift card. 2. Use It While You’re Out. Between parking meters, toll booths, laundromats, and public transportation, there are plenty of places that still accept coins and even encourage you to use them. Keep a bag of change handy to use when these opportunities present themselves. 3. Tip With It. The next time you stop in somewhere to grab a coffee or a bite to eat, toss some of your spare change into the tip jar. Ideally there would be at least a few quarters in the mix, but any amount will show your appreciation (and it still spends the same). 4. Go Through Self Checkout. Use your change at the store without monopolizing a cashier’s time by choosing the self checkout lane. The machine doesn’t care how many coins you use, so you won’t be inconveniencing anyone unless there’s a line behind you (in which case, save it for next time). WASH IT WEDNESDAY Keep Moths Out Of Your Closet [Eucalyptus essential oil being added to a cotton ball.]( These easy-to-make moth balls will keep your clothes intact and your closet smelling fresh. Did you know that moths are only partially to blame for the holes that often appear in sweaters and other clothing items in storage? It’s moth larvae that are doing the actual damage, because the larval stage is the only time moths even have a mouth they can eat with. But where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and where there’s moth larvae, there’s moths. Luckily for us, moths don’t seem to like eucalyptus, and you can use that to your advantage by whipping up your own “moth balls” using [eucalyptus essential oil](. Just add a couple drops of eucalyptus oil to several cotton balls, then tuck them away in various areas of your closet (like in the pockets of jackets, in the back corner of shelves, etc.) Not only will the eucalyptus oil help keep moths and other critters at bay, but it will keep your closet smelling fresh rather than stale or musty. Replace your homemade moth balls with fresh ones as needed as the scent fades. BEAUTY The Best Eyeshadows For Mature Skin [Left: A brush being swirled into an eyeshadow palette. Right: Jillee applying eyeshadow while looking in a small vanity mirror.]( Choose an eyeshadow that enhances your beauty, not the appearance of wrinkles. When you’re shopping for interior paint, you learn that there are some finishes that can draw attention to imperfections while other finishes camouflage them or make them less apparent. Interestingly enough, the same phenomenon occurs with different types of eyeshadow too. Matte and glittery eyeshadows can both draw attention to fine lines, less-than-firm skin, and other features you may not want to highlight. Instead, look for eyeshadows with a satin finish, which are easy to blend and look great on every type of skin. JILLEE'S PICK Books We Read On Vacation [An image of the front cover of the book ]( To me, the word “vacation” implies that the main purpose of the trip is relaxation. That’s why my ideal vacation involves a limited number of planned activities, a lounge chair by the pool or at the beach, and most importantly, a whole lot of reading. There’s a whole subset of books that are perfect for such occasions: beach reads. A great beach read should be light (or at least not depressing), provide an escape (you’re on vacation after all), and have a story that keeps you hooked until the last page. [People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry]( checks all of those boxes. One review I read likened it to a mashup of When Harry Met Sally and One Day, and now that I’ve read it myself I couldn’t agree more! It’s very much the book version of a romantic comedy, and who could ask for a better type of book to read on summer vacation? It will make you laugh, cry, then laugh again while you’re still crying a little. All in all, it’s the most enjoyable feel-good romance I’ve read in a long time. (And speaking of beach reads, Emily Henry’s previous book Beach Read lives up to its moniker too!) [See this and my other recommended reads on Amazon](.
