A crowd-pleasing side dish for potlucks, a visit from the Avon lady, and more. June 19, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! We tend to focus on money when we think about our resources, but our time can be just as valuable. Today’s Good Thing has simple tips that will help you save time so you can spend it elsewhere. There’s also a new Remember When in today’s newsletter, which will take you back to the heyday of a specific type of door-to-door salesman (or should I say sales lady?) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Pressed For Time? Try These Tips [Top left: Jillee using a laptop and looking in her waller. Top right: A charging station with three phones and a tablet plugged into it. Bottom left: Socks in a drawer. Bottom right: An array of products on a counter, including trash bags, paper towels, ziplock bags, and instant mashed potatoes.]( Time is one of your most precious resources, and these tips can help you save more of it. 1. Set Up Auto-Pay. Most recurring bills have an auto-pay option you can set up, or you can probably do it via your online banking portal. Using features like auto-pay, direct deposits, and mobile deposits will save you time on “money management” tasks. 2. Keep Devices Charged. If your phone battery is always on the brink, keep chargers around the house, in your car, at your desk, etc. Plug your phone in throughout the day to avoid having to waste precious time reviving it after it dies. 3. Simplify Your Socks. Choose one style of sock to replace all your current socks. When it’s time to do laundry, you won’t have to spend time matching your socks because any two will match. 4. Subscribe & Save. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, use [Subscribe & Save]( to get home necessities like detergent and toilet paper delivered automatically. You’ll have less to shop for at the store and you’ll save on emergency shopping trips too. COOKING My Mother-In-Law’s Potluck-Perfect Side Dish [Left: A tray and food laid out in the grass for a picnic, with a five-bean hotdish in a blue casserole dish. Right: A close-up of the five-bean hotdish.]( Dorothy Nystul’s baked bean casserole is a crowd-pleasing side at any summer barbecue. If you’ve ever lived in the Upper Midwest or know someone who has, then you may already be familiar with one of the region's staples: the hotdish. These casseroles typically feature ground beef, a canned soup of some kind, and are sometimes topped with tater tots. Last weekend Dave fired up his new smoker and made a rack of ribs, so I decided to make a recipe from his childhood in North Dakota to go alongside them: his mother Dorothy’s five-bean hotdish. It falls somewhere between baked beans and chili, but it's tangy and sweet like good barbecue sauce. This dish is a summertime staple in the Nystul household (and has been for decades), but it’s also been a hit at every cookout and potluck I've taken it to. Whether you need a crowd-pleasing side dish for an upcoming cookout or just want to experience the regional wonder of a true Midwestern hotdish, Dorothy’s recipe won’t let you down. [View The Full Recipe And Instructions]( [View The Full Recipe And Instructions]( UNUSUAL USES Bandanas: Beyond The Basics [Left: A set of cutlery tucked into a bandana being used as a cloth napkin. Center: A bag of peas on a green bandana. Right: A gift wrapped in a purple bandana with a black ribbon.]( Cheap, readily available, and endlessly versatile, here are just a few ways you can use a bandana. 1. Cloth Napkins. You can get a set of matching bandanas for just a few dollars and they’ll add instant charm and character to your table. And just like standard cloth napkins, you can toss them in the wash after dinner and use them again. 2. Ice Pack Wrap. Wrap a bandana around a bag of ice cubes or frozen veggies and use it as an ice pack on minor injuries and swelling. I find that a bandana is just the right thickness for icing injuries because it doesn’t feel too cold or not cold enough. 3. Gift Wrap. You can even use a bandana as gift wrap for smaller items for a cute spin on regular wrapping paper. Plus, your gift recipient can use the bandana for [another purpose]( once they’ve unwrapped their gift! JILLEE'S PICK The Dreamiest Interiors On Instagram [Three phones displaying different areas of the Millhaven Homes Instagram account]( Lately I’ve been searching for design inspiration for my “dream kitchen.” It’s still more of a daydream at this point, but as Paulo Coelho wrote in The Alchemist: “It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.” (You can rationalize anything by incorporating a quote from a well-loved book, right?) Anyway, I was cruising around Instagram when I came across what I can only describe as the motherlode of interior design inspiration. It was the [Instagram profile for Millhaven Homes]( a custom home builder based in Lindon, Utah. I could spend hours scrolling through their feed admiring the gorgeous interiors and airy designs. REMEMBER WHEN Ding Dong, Avon Calling [A photo of a teal box with several small tubes arrarnged inside, with two open tubes in front of it revealing they are small lipsticks. The caption across the top reads: ]( Talk about a blast from the past! These tiny tubes of lipstick were part of the Avon lady’s extensive arsenal of makeup samples that she would bring when she came around to our house when I was a girl. I remember sitting at the kitchen table while my mom and the Avon lady went through the latest catalog, because if I was lucky, I would come away with a couple of those little lipstick samples for myself. Trying them on made me feel so sophisticated. While the Avon lady was hoping to sell makeup to my mom, I was buying into a dazzling vision of the glamorous woman I dreamed of becoming. I may have been a girl in poorly applied lipstick samples, but I felt more like the next Cheryl Tiegs. 🎉 GIVEAWAY You & A Friend Could Win an Instant Pot Duo Crisp This week's giveaway has double the fun, because I’m giving away not one, but two [8 Qt.
