A more effective way to remove makeup, the vintage cake that went viral, and more. June 17, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Iâve got a lot of good stuff lined up for you today, including a new Your One Good Thing that will help you streamline your fridge organization, courtesy of Gretchen from South Carolina. (Thanks Gretchen!) Iâll also tell you about a deliciously quirky cake recipe thatâs been making the rounds online, and a simple swap thatâs better for both the planet and your pocketbook. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal [Left: Pouring vinegar into an ice cube tray. Right: Putting frozen vinegar cubes into a disposal.]( Lemon and vinegar make a quick and easy solution for smelly, grimy garbage disposals. Have you ever noticed an unpleasant smell emanating from the depths of your garbage disposal? With as much gunk and grime that passes through them on a daily basis, itâs no wonder that grimy buildup can occur and start to stink up the whole area. My preferred method for cleaning and freshening my garbage disposal is with a few frozen vinegar and lemon cubes. Between the cleaning and deodorizing properties of vinegar and the fresh scent of lemon, these easy-to-make cubes work like a charm! To make your own, cut a lemon as many small chunks as there are cavities in one of your ice cube trays. Put a lemon chunk into each cavity, then fill with white vinegar. Place the tray in your freezer and transfer the cubes to a ziplock freezer bag once theyâre frozen solid. On a weekly basis, turn your faucet and garbage disposal on and toss a few of the frozen vinegar cubes into the sink. Keep the disposal and water running until you hear it running clear, and youâre done! WHY DIDNâT I THINK OF THAT? Picnic Blanket Protection [A shower curtain liner laid out on the grass with a fuzzy blanket on top of it.]( Looking forward to a picture perfect picnic? Take a cheap shower curtain liner along with you. Nothing threatens to make an outdoor picnic less enjoyable than unexpectedly damp grass. Between dew and automated sprinkler systems, picnic-ruining wet grass can strike at any moment. What you need is a cheap insurance policy that can protect you in case you encounter damp grass. For that, simply head to the housewares section of any store and buy the cheapest shower curtain liner they have. Bring the shower curtain liner with you when you head out for a picnic (or soccer game, park, etc.), and if the grass feels damp, you can lay the liner down first and put your blanket on top of it. No more damp picnic blankets, and more importantly, no damp behinds either. SWAP THAT FOR THIS Remove Makeup With Less Waste [Left: Disposable makeup wipes. Right: Microfiber makeup remover cloths.]( The convenience of makeup remover wipes isnât worth the cost or the waste they produce. Up until a few years ago, I used makeup remover wipes almost exclusively to remove my stubborn eye makeup. But after buying one too many packages of wipes, a switch flipped in my brainâI realized there had to be a better option and I was determined to find it. I eventually did find it in the form of a set of [microfiber makeup remover cloths](. Just dampen one with liquid makeup remover, micellar water, or regular water and wipe your makeup away. Then you can rinse the cloth out in the sink afterward or toss it in the wash. Not only are makeup remover cloths less wasteful, but the fluffy microfibers are gentler and more effective at taking off makeup than disposable wipes. And makeup comes right out of the cloths in the wash so theyâre easy to keep clean. All in all, the only regret I had after [switching from wipes to cloths]( was that I didnât do it sooner! JILLEE'S PICK When Cake Goes Viral [Whipping cream cake]( In the age of social media, the ease and speed of sharing things means that todayâs trends go way beyond the limits of fashion and beauty. Almost anything can become a trend nowadays, like dances, books, videos, hacks, and even old recipes. I recently learned about a new recipe trend [on Food52]( an old-school whipping cream cake. The trend can be traced back to a Reddit post in a subreddit community called r/Old_Recipes, where users try and share vintage recipes from old cookbooks. [The recipe for whipping cream cake]( like many other recipes from way back when, calls for a handful of ingredients and provides only the most basic of instructions. It also has an interesting quirkâit calls for the cake to be started in a cold oven. But people across the internet are raving about this cake, so I think Iâll give it a try this weekend and see what all the fuss is about. YOUR ONE GOOD THING Color Code Your Condiments Gretchen from Bluffton, South Carolina has a great tip for a more organized fridge. She recommends arranging your condiments by color and storing each color group on its own shelf in the door of your fridge. According to Gretchen, this system makes every condiment a lot easier to locate. Since her family members know which shelf to scan while searching for a specific condiment, they find it faster and spend less time with the fridge open. Simple and brilliantâmy favorite kind of tip! Hereâs the system Gretchen uses in her fridge. Give it a try, or use it as a framework for a color-coding system of your own design: • Top shelf: red condiments (salsa, chili sauces, barbecue sauce, etc.)
• Middle shelf: white and yellow condiments (mayo, ranch, tartar sauce, mustards, etc.)
• Bottom shelf: green and black condiments (pickles, capers, relish, olives, etc. Have a great tip or trick of your own?
