Handy foods to keep on hand, simple solutions for vanishing socks and troublesome mascara, and more.

Handy foods to keep on hand, simple solutions for vanishing socks and troublesome mascara, and more. June 2, 2021 [View Online]( [One Good Thing logo]( Good morning! When it comes to housework, there are two skills that can save you a lot of time and effort: efficiency and creative problem solving. Today you’ll find out how freezing some unexpected foods will make you more efficient in the kitchen, and you’ll learn simple solutions for everyday annoyances like lost socks and clumpy mascara. As for the problem of how to spend all the time you’ll save? Well, there are worse problems to have. :-) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Think Outside The (Ice)box [freezing foods]( Freeze these unexpected foods to save time and effort in the kitchen. 1. Sour Cream. Freeze it in a ziplock freezer back, then thaw to use in baked goods, soups, and casseroles. 2. Cream Cheese. Stock up when it’s on sale and freeze it right in the package, then thaw to use in cheesecake and other treats. 3. Onions. Keeping your freezer stocked with diced onions makes last-minute dinners a breeze. The best part? You don’t even have to thaw them—just toss them in a pan and start cooking! 4. Avocado. Toss diced avocado pieces in lemon juice, then put them in a freezer bag and press out all the air before freezing. Thaw it out to use it in smoothies, toast, or homemade guacamole. 5. Bacon. Cooked bacon freezes well, and it’s a great time saver too! Thaw it out and crumble it over salads, add it to quiche, or enjoy it alone for a quick snack! 6. Garlic. Drizzle olive oil over minced garlic, then freeze it in individual tablespoon-sized portions to use down the road. You can either add the frozen garlic right to your pan, or thaw it in the fridge for a couple of hours before you start cooking. We’ve all lost a sock or two in the wash at some point, and where they end up is anyone’s guess. But even if there is some sort of interdimensional wormhole inside your laundry room, these simple solutions can help ensure you never lose another sock again! 1. Zip Them Up. As soon as you take your socks off at the end of the day, put them in a zippered mesh laundry bag. To wash them, just zip the bag closed and toss it in your washer. 2. Pin Them Together. Keep a dish of safety pins handy so you can pin your socks together at the top after removing them. You can toss them in the wash just like that! 3. Go All In. Replace all of your socks with new ones that are all the same color and style. (No need to match your socks when they all look the same!) Before You Toss It, Try This [Jillee putting on makeup]( When a treasured tube of mascara starts to look dry or clumpy, use this quick hack to fix it! Only a month or so after splurging on a tube of MAC mascara as a special treat, I realized to my horror that it was already starting to dry out. Luckily for me, this easy fix worked better than I could have hoped! To revive your dry or clumpy mascara, add 3-5 drops of saline solution to the tube. (You can usually find saline near the eye drops or contact cases at the store.) Slide the wand back into the tube and swish it around to “stir” the saline and mascara together. Check the consistency—if it still seems a bit dry, add a few more drops of saline and repeat. And just like that, your mascara will be revived, renewed, and ready to wear! I’m not unwilling to try other mascaras (like the MAC one I mentioned above), but I always come back to this one in the end.
