Here’s what happened: Montana’s government started this year with a $2.6 billion surplus. And then Gianforte’s billionaire buddies and fancy lobbyists smelled the cash and came knocking. Gianforte was warned that handing out bigger corporate tax breaks to his friends would mean every homeowner in Montana would get slammed with huge property tax increases. He did it anyway. Ordinary Montanans got screwed. And Gianforte knew it. So he “kindly” set up a complicated application process and gave us 45 days to request a one-time rebate. Gianforte could have just automatically given homeowners the rebate, like governors before him. But he doesn’t want to make it easy — he purposefully made it hard so regular Montanans end up paying more, and he can give his billionaire buddies bigger tax breaks.
