{NAME}, I wanted to reach out on the last day of Women's History Month to honor our past, celebrate how far we've come, and look towards the future. Maryland is home to many female trailblazers, from Harriet Tubman, to one of my personal role models, Senator Barbara Mikulski. It has been 36 years since Senator Mikulski crushed a glass ceiling in Maryland, and in the country, by becoming the first woman U.S. Senator who was not elected as a replacement for their spouse. Senator Mikulski fought tirelessly for Marylanders and I am grateful for the path that she has laid for many Maryland women to come. Earlier this year, we made history as I was sworn in as the first female Comptroller, and as the first woman ever elected independently to statewide office in Maryland. I was honored to have Senator Mikulski speak at my swearing-in ceremony and share some of her wisdom with me. I may have been the first, but for my daughter Eliza and all our daughters, I will do my best to ensure that I am not the last. We cannot pretend that our "normal" has been working for American women. For Maryland to meet its full potential, we cannot afford to leave women out of the picture. In the economy that we build, they must be central. As Comptroller, I plan to help forge a new path that uplifts women, while honoring those that came before me. My best, Brooke (she/her/hers) --------------------------------------------------------------- Authorized by Brooke Lierman for Maryland; Chairman, Alvin Lee; Treasurer, Candace Dodson-Reed.
