The days may be brisk but you know thereâs still plenty to do in Melbourne, from a peek inside the cityâs most beautiful buildings to the bright lights of Gertrude Street. Rug up in your favourite sweater, stick on your statement socks and get out there. Hereâs a snapshot of what we love this month and why, by Broadsheet in partnership with Stella Artois.
Up in Lights
â Rug up and check out the Gertrude Street Projection Festival, which runs from July 21â30. Celebrating its 10th year, the digital projections will be spread across 30 sites along Gertrude Street, including alleys, shop windows, restaurants and building walls. Running alongside are a series of free and ticketed events including food, dance, and live performances from local musicians and DJs. The festival hub is at the Catfish so pop in for a beer between laps. [Gertrude Street Projection Festival]( broadsheet.com.au
â Over in Fed Square, ACMI is having its own festival of light. Theyâve just launched the Magic of Aardman, a showcase of films from the animation studio behind classics like Wallace and Gromit and Morph. This is your chance to look behind the scenes at one of the most accomplished claymation studios in the world. [Magic of Aardman]( acmi.net.au
â Fresh from the bright lights of the Big Apple, Brooklyn-based dance-punk heroes LCD Soundsystem are back in town for one night only this month. Highly-regarded for their reliably stunning live performances, the band's new album, American Dream, is out September 1 â their first following a six-year hiatus. Get a teaser of the new era at Margaret Court arena on July 26. [Tickets to LCD Soundystem]( premier.ticketek.com.au
Have an Ice Day
â Melbourne is currently revelling in the colder weather with no fewer than three outdoor ice rinks and a 40-metre ice slide currently in operation. There is the annual River Rink in Federation Square, but our pick is the Common Man bar in Southbank, which has transformed its lawn into Skate, Slide and Chill. Itâs an ice rink, toboggan slide and bar all in one. [Skate, Slide and Chill]( broadsheet.com.au
â For something a little more fast-paced, throw yourself down Eureka Skydeckâs 40-metre Ice Slide. Itâs supposedly for kids, but theyâre not going to turn away adults. Open every day from now until July 16. [Ice Slide]( eurekaskydeck.com.au
â Alternatively, head to Map 57 in St Kilda, a pop-up garden featuring its own ice rink, live performances, food stalls, lights, fires and drink. There's several feature shows on the program, including new circus show BLANC de BLANC, held in The Aurora Spiegeltent. The mini-festival runs from June 15â30. [Map 57 details and tickets]( map57.com
Stella Artois Suggests
â Hunter and Hound is a Melbourne-based company offering fashion lifestyle accessories to dogs. These arenât cute cartoons and garish pet-focused patterns â the companyâs designs reflect current fashion trends, much like a clothing brand. âA match-for-match between humans and dogs can sometimes be a bit lame,â says founder Simone Payton. âWhat Iâm doing is more about having the option to style your dog similarly to yourself. Itâs not supposed to be a novelty.â The range includes adjustable collars, dog bandanas (all machine-washable) and matching snapback caps for owners. Dog leads are coming soon, and Payton intends to expand further into clothing for both dogs and humans. We love Paytonâs commitment to celebrating the legacy of friendship between person and pup. Out Along the Windy Moors
â If youâre going out, youâll need a raincoat. Luckily thereâs a new Rains concept store in the city. The Danish purveyor of buttery raincoats has the core range of black, navy and green, but you can also get your hands on this seasonâs new release including pink and blue-green colourways. [Rains Opens in Melbourne]( broadsheet.com.au
â If you want to not just pass through the cold in style but actively flee from it, sweat it out at South Yarraâs One Hot Yoga. Try a 60-minute, deep-core strengthening, 37-degree session, or if youâre a newcomer, sign up for the two-week taster â unlimited classes for $50. [One Hot Yoga]( onehotyoga.com.au
â Do you like dancing? Do you like Kate Bush? Do you like the oddly sensuous choreography of Kateâs 1978 hit Wuthering Heights? From its Melbourne roots, The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever has become an oddball global tradition. Last year more than 2000 people converged on the Kings Domain to sway, sing and raise money for charity partners Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre and Alannah & Madeline Foundation. This year itâll happen again on Saturday July 15. Pack your best red dress. [Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever]( themostwutheringheightsdayever.com
Explore Indoors
â On July 29 and 30, some of the cityâs most beautiful and mysterious buildings are once again flinging open their doors to the public for Open House Melbourne. This year more than 200 buildings will be on display, making it the biggest Open House ever. Tip: get yourself inside Art Deco block Cairo House overlooking Carlton Gardens, or the heritage-listed Brighton Municipal Offices, inspired by the Guggenheim Museum in New York. [Open House Melbourne]( broadsheet.com.au
â Our pick of the markets for July is Finders Keepers, a massive three-day extravaganza with more than 250 makers under one roof at the Royal Exhibition Building. It holds a handcrafted dreamland, providing above and beyond your hand-painted clothing, crochet-rug and soy-candle needs. Have a leisurely browse from July 14â16. [Finders Keepers]( thefinderskeepers.com
â A Finders Keepers highlight is sure to be South Melbourne-based Resawn, which specialises in furniture and homewares made with recycled and sustainably managed timbers. You can always get Resawn pieces online, but the Finders Keepers market is a great way to get a feel for the timber before you buy. Go run your fingers along a finely sanded edge and dream.
