Ever wondered what makes a practice drill truly effective? Sure, there are tons of different drills out there for you to choose from… But that doesn’t make it any easier to know which ones are actually effective. As we head towards the middle of the season, it’s critical that you use the best drills to get your practice plans dialed. That way, your players keep performing better in the games! That’s why I want to share [this article]( from Coach Nate Sanderson, who’s currently leading the #2 ranked team in Iowa, Mount Vernon. He took over the program just two years ago after a one win season. And Coach Sanderson previously won 2 state championships at Springville. So he must be doing something right! That’s why I always listen when he shares his knowledge about coaching… or specifically drill and practice design in this case. In the article, he shares four key questions to evaluate your drills and ensure they propel your team's progress: 1. SPECIFIC PURPOSE Does your drill have a clear purpose, addressing a specific aspect of your game that needs improvement? For example, perhaps you want your guards to finish with more consistency on the fast break. That becomes the “purpose” of a drill that you choose. The key is, the more specific you can be in identifying the exact situation you want to improve, the better you will be able to match an appropriate drill to teach the desired skill. 2. GAME-LIKE SIMULATION How closely does the drill replicate real game situations, especially considering defensive elements to make it more game-like? For example, in order to score more frequently in transition IN GAMES, you must mimic game situations by including DEFENSE in your transition drills. 3. EFFICIENCY Is your drill maximizing player activity and skill repetitions, or is it just a busy but unproductive routine? In order to find out exactly how efficient your drills are, I advise coaches to use managers, injured players, assistant coaches, or even parents to COUNT the number of shots, passes, dribbles, etc. a player performs in the drill. You might be surprised by the results. 4. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY Does the drill challenge your players appropriately, maintaining a balance between success and struggle? Drill constraints should produce a 50-60% success rate. Meaning if a player can successfully perform a movement or skill correctly in 60% (or more) of the repetitions, then it's time to make the drill more difficult! You want your players to constantly be pushing on their limitations and raising the bar. For a deeper dive into these essential aspects of drill design, you can [check out the full article here.Â]( Plus, the article perfectly aligns with this week’s sale on [Coach Sanderson’s Game-Based Training System]( As he teaches you how to design your own game-like drills that are highly effective!
