A few years back I got this reply from a coach who strongly disagreed with one of Coach Kelbic

A few years back I got this reply from a coach who strongly disagreed with one of Coach Kelbick’s principles: “For a coach to pass on the message to players that "I don't want you to read your defense" is very difficult for me to take. As a coach for more than 35 years at the youth, high school, NAIA, NCAA, and Olympic level, all of my teaching of offensive play is based on "reading the defense". If you want to develop intelligent players they must see the positioning and movement of the defenders. It should be taught from 1 on 1 play to 5 on 5 play. It is a long, tedious process but is necessary if you want players to be intelligent players rather than being robots." What this coach is referring to is Don Kelbick’s belief that you should STOP reading the defense. Instead, he teaches that you should attack immediately and do what you’re best at! And while I understand this coach’s rebuttal, Don’s approach makes a lot of sense. Think about it… The defense is forcing you into what they want you to do so you’re not successful. Oftentimes, this is based on their scouting reports and what they’ve determined as your weaknesses. So if the defense knows you don’t score well going to your left and they force you that way, should you just take what the defense gives you? I don’t think so, and neither does Don. Instead, you should make the defense react to you! By attacking immediately and playing to your strengths, you’re more likely to succeed because you’ll have more confidence. If you instead play timidly by just following the defense’s direction, odds are that you’ll play with a lot more indecision and not be anywhere near as successful. I also want to respond briefly to this coach’s quote against this approach: "It is a long, tedious process but is necessary if you want players to be intelligent players rather than being robots." That's why people LOVE Don Kelbick's [Attack & Counter System]( so much–it shortens the learning curve tremendously. To be effective, it isn't long and tedious. It's simple and it works right away. Think about what happens when you attack immediately and then if needed you counter away from the help defense... Your poor decision makers now are mostly making good decisions. Your good decision makers have even more scoring opportunities. And to really drive this point home, I want to share one more quick story. Years ago, I coached a player named George Bugarinovic who was smart as a whip. He had a 4.3 GPA and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a medical degree. When we went over game film and strategies during practice, he knew how to do things. However, he had a big problem. He thought way too much and reacted indecisively. In fact, he looked like a robot trying to read the defense. Over time, Coach Dwight Williams did a great job of getting him to just attack. He told George to stop thinking so much. And it worked... George went on to have 10 points and 20 rebounds in the 6A Kansas state championship game. George then rode this momentum and went on to become an all-conference player at Johns Hopkins University. (He even won the prestigious Jostens Award Trophy awarded to only one male athlete in the country!) The point of all this is to demonstrate the power of playing decisively. By attacking immediately and playing to your strengths (instead of just taking what the defense gives you), you give yourself so many more opportunities to be successful. That’s the power of Don Kelbick’s approach in his [Attack & Counter System](. And even if you think "Attack Immediately" and "Do What You're Good At" are not right for you, it really doesn't matter. If you ignore the mentality and just focus on the way that Don Kelbick teaches skill development, footwork, and counters, your team will still improve quite a bit–simply because of his emphasis on overall skill development too. And remember, we’re running a $100 discount (over 50% off) on his entire system this week.
