Woohoo! My favorite time of the year is here…  We’re going to have an educational series over the next 10 days on something that has had a HUGE impact on my coaching career and on the players that I’ve coached.  It’s Don Kelbick’s [Attack & Counter Skill Development System](   It revolutionized the way I looked at skill development and I hope it does the same for you…  Well, let’s get to the first concept below!  While he probably wasn’t talking about basketball at the time, Leonardo da Vinci got it right when he said: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”  Nowadays, you can find thousands of different scoring moves all over the Internet.  And while that’s a neat feature of the modern world, it also makes it so much harder to determine which ones you should actually teach your players.  Because you can’t teach 47 dribbling moves, 29 triple threat moves, 39 post moves, etc. and expect your players to develop the muscle memory to use them effectively!  Don Kelbick recognized this problem and came up with a unique solution based on his decades of experience studying the game.  What he noticed was that the same footwork was being used for ALL types of different moves–and it came down to the same 3 pivots and 3 counters.  With the approach that he developed from this realization, you don’t teach 7 different moves and give it 7 different names….  Instead you teach the player the same footwork move that they can then apply to 7+ different situations.  Why is this so valuable?  Because once they master these 3 pivots and 3 counters, they can enjoy the freedom to layer in more advanced moves from this foundation.  Countless times I’ve witnessed average youth and high school players execute a variety of “Pro Moves” without even realizing it… after just a few days of learning the footwork system.  This makes for a much quicker learning curve, since every move builds on the previous one—instead of trying to constantly add new moves to your repertoire.  That’s because once you learn the 3 pivots and 3 counters, the combination of moves are endless.   Players even bust out moves instinctually that they’ve NEVER done in a practice setting because the footwork can be applied at any time in any situation.  Once you master the footwork, the moves become fluid and instinctual. It’s really a thing of beauty to us basketball junkies.  Let me give you an example:  One piece of footwork Coach Kelbick teaches is the Step Through.  (You can also [watch the videos of the moves here]( if you’re more of a visual learner.)  Situation 1: Post Play  Let’s pretend you’re in the post area. On the catch, you turn and face the basket.   If the defender takes away the shot off the catch, you can immediately counter with a step through move. This can put the defender on your backside and create a lay up opportunity.  Situation 2: Getting Open  Whether you’re a post or perimeter player, an effective strategy for getting open is to get the defense on your back.  So now take the defender near the basket, use the same step through move, and get the defender on your back.   From there, you can either post up and call for the ball…  Or you can use that step through to get the defenders momentum going backwards then immediately cut to the perimeter to catch a pass.  Situation 3: Perimeter Move  Now, you can use that exact same step through move on the perimeter.  Let’s pretend you go from the corner to the wing and receive a pass. On the catch, you face the basket ready to shoot. The defender closes out hard and takes away the shot, you can immediately use that same step through move to pin the defender on your hip/backside to create an open drive to the basket.  Situation 4: Finishing Move  Let’s take the same situation above where you’re attacking the basket off the dribble.    Now, a help defender slid over and stopped your dribble drive.  Now, you quickly come to a stop, then execute your step through to get by the defender and slither your way to the basket.  Situation 5: Dribble Move  Let’s pretend now that you’re dribbling down the court.  You look to attack and a defender cuts you off. Now, you quickly change the directions with the dribble and use the same step through footwork to blow by the defender.  Once again, if you’d like to see videos of these situations, [watch the videos here](.  Making subtle adjustments like these to your coaching approach can have a huge impact on your players’ development over the short term and the long term!  Instead of feeling confused or overwhelmed by too many options, they’ll feel completely confident knowing they have flexibility to get creative once they master these critical skills.  And with Coach Kelbick’s [Attack & Counter Skill Development]( program, you’ll be able to learn exactly how to implement principles like these that have made him one of the most effective basketball development experts– working with players from Olympic gold medalists, NBA 3-point champions, and NBA All-Stars to thousands of collegiate, high school, and youth players too!  This program contains over 50 multi-purpose skill development drills and a comprehensive skill development program for improving mentality, footwork, shooting, ball handling, finishing, post play, perimeter play, guard skills, and more.  And for a limited time, you can get a $100 discount on his entire system!  [Click here to learn more about Coach Kelbick’s “Attack & Counter” system and claim your $100 discount](  All the best,  Joe Haefner Breakthrough Basketball            This email was sent to {EMAIL} because you indicated that you'd like to receive emails and updates from Breakthrough Basketball on 2016-12-16 05:42:39.
