Last week, we discussed redefining game-like practice. To make your drills more game-like... In addition to the shooter, you needed at least one teammate and one defender… that way, a passing option and decision-making were incorporated in your shooting practice. This better represents the conditions of a game and affects your shooting percentage. 2v1 and 2v2 drills are great tools to match these conditions without sacrificing too many repetitions when compared to 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5. In fact, game-based drills guru Nate Sanderson had tremendous success implementing these drills into offseason workouts and team practices. In just his first season coaching the girls varsity program at Mt. Vernon High School in Iowa... They jumped from a 1-win season last year to a 12-win season this year. Their 3-point shooting percentage sky-rocketed from 22% last season to 37% this season… setting a school record! And they attempted almost 20 3-pointers a game. Now, are we saying that you should primarily use 2v1 and 2v2 drills for shooting practice? Some situations may call for it, but you need to evaluate each situation. Traditional 1v0 drills (no defense) to 5v5 drills all serve a purpose and should be used when developing players. They all have benefits in different ways. Going back to Nate... In his [Game-Based Drills System]( Sanderson beautifully explains the benefits of small-group drills (1v1 and 2v2 variations), how he divides them, and why he uses them. Here’s what Sanderson says about the first half of the videos which focuses on individual offensive improvement. In Part I, we limited our offense to attacking actions to 1v1 and 1v2 situations because we want players to develop an aggressive, attacking mentality. We want players to have the confidence that they can beat multiple defenders in a variety of situations. By taking away the passing option we force players to find a way to score. By starting here, players are more likely to hunt for opportunities to score that ultimately engages more defensive attention and creates more space to pass the ball. The second half of the video focuses on “game-like drills” as defined above... The second half of the video will focus on adding a passing element to our two-man actions. In the same way that we created a step-by-step progression for manipulating the challenge in 1v1 and 1v2 situations, we will follow a similar model as we add decisionmaking to our drills in Part II. Drill Progression: Progression #1 – 2v1 Offense vs. One Live Defender Progression #2 – 2v1 (+1) Offense vs. One Live Defender & One Disadvantaged Defender Progression #3 – 2v2 Offense vs. Two Live Defenders Progression #4 – 2v3 vs. Offense vs. Two Live Defenders & One Disadvantaged Defender And as Sanderon states, these 2v1 and 2v2 progressions are great for decision-making... These simple drills and games will combine multiple layers of decision-making including: - Knowing when to shoot, drive, or pull-up
- Knowing how and when to pass to an open teammate
- Knowing how to position away from the ball to create better passing options This segment will revisit the many of the same situations we demonstrated during the first half of the video starting with transition offense. We will then progress into the half court where we will explore driving actions, weak side actions, two-man interactions on the perimeter, and opportunities generated by cutting and posting As you can see, each type of drill can have different benefits when appropriately implemented. Personally, I’ve used [Sanderson’s Game-Based Drills (designed for 2-4 players)]( quite a bit. I used them a lot in small group workouts and offseason practices. During the season, I almost always allocated 15-30 minutes in each team practice for small-group drills (2-4 players). Drills like these are also a staple at our [Breakthrough Basketball Camps](. Hopefully, these ideas and thoughts will help you design better drills for your practices and workouts! Next week I’ll send over a video of Nate taking you through a drill progression. Also...
