You know as well as I that we live in a world of “information overload.” I’m guilty of researching too much, excited about finding all sorts of new ways to do or solve anything, including coaching basketball. At times, I’ve definitely stalled out with “paralysis analysis” and suffered from QUANTITY over QUALITY when in fact, it should be the reverse. I think this graphic I saw the other day while researching “information overload” (ironically) says it all: Luckily for me basketball-wise, I was very fortunate to meet NBA Skills Trainer Don Kelbick nearly 15 years ago. For those of you who don’t know Don Kelbick, he has trained Olympic gold medalists and NBA All-Stars like Joe Johnson, NBA Champions and NBA All-Defensive Players like Bruce Bowen, NBA 3-Point Shooting Leaders like Raja Bell, JJ Barea, and thousands of collegiate, high school, and youth players. Don Kelbick is a master at [simplifying the complex subject of player development]( One example of this is Don’s simplified footwork system which is the foundation of every skill and move that he teaches… "Rather than teaching you 100 different moves, I will teach you 3 pivots and 3 counters and how to apply them in 100 different situations." And Don isn’t alone… Kobe Bryant told The New York Times in 2009 that he worked on footwork since he was a kid… "I’ve always worked on it, always worked on it since I was a kid. I just watched different players — Olajuwon, Michael, Charles [Barkley] — and just all kinds of footwork and just tried to emulate them." When Don studied the game, he noticed that the same footwork was being used in different situations with all of these different moves… guard play, post play, dribble moves, getting open without the ball defense, etc. That’s where he got the 3 pivots and 3 counters. There's only a certain amount of things you can do on a basketball court. It's the angle and the context that you’re in that determines what you're doing. For example… - An inside pivot to get a shot in the post is exactly the same footwork used to box a player out. - The footwork is similar when changing directions for a V-cut to get open or a crossover dribble with the ball. - A drop step in the post is the same footwork as a perimeter player using a step to create space from the defender. What’s great about this is… There is nothing new to learn once they’ve mastered the 3 pivots and 3 counters. The amount of time that they can apply the footwork to the new situation is lightning quick! To an outsider, it appears that your players are learning new moves at an ultra-fast pace. However, it’s just the same footwork used in a different situation. Ultimately, this leads to faster skill development and more confident players! This skill development approach is super effective and super simple! Even Albert Einstein, whom many consider a genius, listed “Simple” as the highest level of intellect… Sometimes less is more - just as Coach Williams discovered… The Attack & Counter Skill Development system has greatly simplified my understanding of individual offense and player development. As a high school coach, I was looking for something that I could implement during a practice but also that I could work with a player one-on-one as well. This system accomplishes both of those at once and is a lot of fun to teach. All in all, this is an amazing product well worth the investment. - Rik Williams from San Diego, CA Really, just the simplicity of the footwork alone is worth the investment. Now if you want to learn exactly how to accelerate your player development and win more games by simplifying the teaching process, check out [Don Kelbick's Attack and Counter Skill Development System]( (discounted until Sunday).  The Best, - Joe Haefner
