There can be one problem with full court pressure...eventually teams start figuring it out. If this has happened to you, I bet you’ve had to call off the pressure because you were giving up too many easy baskets. So the opponent took you out of your game...when the press was supposed to take away what they do best and make them turn the ball over or play at a pace they’re not used to. This actually reminds me of a story that my colleague was telling me...and it's about trying to "round up" some cattle of all things...forcing them from the wide-open pasture into a 4' x 8' cattle trailer. She and her family put up some gates to “trap” the cattle and started applying the pressure, moving them towards the trap that led into the trailer opening... But cattle are smart and figured it out. They were forced into the gated area but quickly and forcefully broke out. After several frustrating attempts, the fatigued farmers gave up and took a break. They came up with a new strategy, though, because time was ticking - they changed the layout of the gates and how they pressured the animals. This needed to work because they had to get the steers to the auction in about half an hour. Long story short, with the modifications in place, it didn’t take long and they were able to "steer the steers” pretty smoothly, right into that gated trap, load them up, and race down to the auction with just minutes to spare. I think you can see where I’m going with this. The farmers (defense) had to do certain things differently to achieve their end goal. So, they took away what the cattle (offense) did best. And that’s exactly what Rob Beucler has done to his version of the [2-2-1 Press]( that he has been running for the past 25+ years. Coach Beucler found that other teams got used to the 2-2-1 and figured out how to break it... ...so he adapted & changed it, calling out certain names to do certain things differently - just to bother other teams, which his teams are extremely good at! [He fixed it with alternative coverages]( that allow you to... - Slow the game down when facing faster, more athletic teams
- Speed the game up against bigger, less agile teams
- Create turnovers and transition opportunities for your team
- Force the ball into weaker players’ hands who can’t handle pressure
- Take star players out of the game with aggressive traps and pressure It’s probably something you should look at if: - You’re looking for a versatile press that can be applied against a wide variety of teams
- You want the benefits of pressure defense without giving up tons of easy baskets
- You want to press, but you have a big who you don’t want to get exposed (put him in the back line)
- You don’t want to waste a lot of time with trial-and-error and you’d rather just leverage a veteran coach’s experience
- You want to easily transition into man or zone defense in the half court after pressing Just like Rick Pitino and Jim Calhoun, the [2-2-1 Press]( has been Coach Beucler’s mainstay press for the past two decades at Eastern High School because he figured out how to make it work and keep making it work…opponent to opponent...year to year. Just look at what this press has helped Beucler accomplish… - State Coach of the Year winner (OH - Division III)
- 4-Time Southern Hills Athletic Conference Coach of the Year
- 7 Southern Hills Athletic Conference titles
- 4 District Tournament Titles
- State Final Four appearance Other coaches have come away very impressed with [this system](... “The best, most comprehensive video I've ever seen on the 2-2-1 press. Every situation is covered in great detail. The little nuances are really important for making this pressure defense successful. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in running the 2-2-1. Additionally, the break down drills are very beneficial as well. Well done.” - Lance Fritz from Westfield, WI “Awesome. Easy to follow and goes in great detail how to set up the press and control tempo. I had high hopes for this product and definitely exceeded my expectations.” - Wayne McDonough from Chickamauga, Georgia So even though it’s a highly effective press, we do have a disclaimer…this program probably is NOT for you if: - You coach youth players under the age of 12 (we don’t recommend using full court pressure with 6th grade and under. Personally, I don’t use zone defenses until the age 15 or older)... unless you want to expand your coaching knowledge to become the best coach possible. - You prefer not to press and instead just stick to half court defense. At the same time, it’s vital to have a secondary defense and late-game defense. The secondary defense is used to disrupt offensive flow. The late-game defense is used in situations in which you’re behind and need to catch up. Those would be reasons to consider. You can now get the program at a 30% discount until midnight tonight.
