If you’ve been following college basketball for awhile, you know that Mark Few's Gonzaga program is one of the best in NCAA Men’s Basketball. Few is now the winningest active coach with a .834 win percentage (630-125) and last year took Gonzaga to their 23rd straight trip to the NCAA Tournament! Each of the last three seasons (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21), Gonzaga's offense has been ranked #1 according to Ken Pomery's stats.... and this is out of 350+ teams! When asked about their offense, Gonzaga’s assistant coach Tommy Lloyd summed it up nicely: We actually don’t run a lot of plays. It’s really just guys playing within a framework that we practice a lot. There’s a ton of freedom with that and the players have to make the decisions. This probably sounds very similar to previous emails where we've talked about avoiding plays and teaching universal offensive concepts (UOCs) to youth and high school teams. Examples of this are cutting backdoor when overplayed, moving to open space on dribble penetration, attacking screens, etc. This works so well because your practice time isn't wasted on teaching plays. Memorizing plays doesn't translate to better players. Instead, you teach them how to play. That way, you spend every minute of practice creating better players.  This is why Coach Few has had so much success... he’s phenomenal at developing better players, NOT plays. And when you do this over multiple seasons... that's when you start to see big improvements in your players. That's why Gonzaga's Corey Kispert went from bench player averaging 6 PPG to All-American averaging 19 PPG as a senior. That's why Gonzaga's Drew Timme went from backup center at 9 PPG to All-American averaging 19 PPG in just one year. Interestingly, Timme made a comment that really stuck out to me - he decided to skip the NBA draft because... He looks forward to “growing his game more" with Coach Few. Timme nailed it...That’s exactly what Gonzaga’s offensive system does - it grows players. How Can You Grow Players? Plain and simple - all coaches need resources. We believe that the [Complete Offensive System with Tim Schuring]( is one of the best comprehensive resources on the market for youth and high school coaches. It does exactly what Gonzaga does.
