--------------------------------------------------------------- Two Shooting Drills for the Tuck and Set Point - Including the Most Underrated Old School Shooting Drill - By Joe Haefner Audience: Players, Coaches, Parents
Age Level: Youth, High School, College, Pros In the previous two articles, we discussed how⦠- [Almost all great shooters dip the ball](. You can view slow motion shots of Steph Curry, Diana Taurasi, and Larry Bird. - You have to be careful if teaching the dip. In fact, I donât even talk about dipping the ball with players anymore. It can mess shooters up. I prefer the Tuck. - [The Tuck and the Set Point are vital for developing a shooting motion]( like the best shooters in the world. The ball needs to reach the set point prior to extending your legs to jump for proper coordination, timing, and rhythm for the shot. You can read [this]( and [this]( to understand these concepts in more depth. Now, in this article, Iâm going to reveal an âold schoolâ drill and second drill that I believe is vital for developing a great shot. These will help you develop proper rhythm, timing, and coordination that players like Trae Young and Steph Curry use to knock down shots from long range. Now, letâs get to what looks like the good oleâ triple threat drill.
 One of the Most Underrated âOld Schoolâ Shooting Drills For Timing and Coordination - Get the Ball to Set Position! You spin the ball to yourself, jog or run a few steps, gather the ball, and come to quick stop or 1-2 stop. In addition to the spin, you can also practice the dribble. You run and take one or two dribbles, gather the ball, and come to quick stop or 1-2 stop. When you gather the ball, you immediately Tuck/cushion the ball and transition the ball to your set position. This is a quick, fluid motion. At the same time, you drop your hips, load your legs, and get ready to extend to jump. This is your ending position for the drill. This is vital because it trains you to raise the ball to the set position prior to extending your legs to jump. And as discussed in a [previous article]( this is what elite shooters do! If you start to extend your legs or jump before reaching the set position, it can create an awkward rhythm and timing with the shooting motion which results in less accurate shooting. This also reduces your shooting range. In [this video clip]( the late Bob Bigelow takes you through a drill. The drill would be similar to the video. However, you would put an emphasis on immediately getting the ball to the set position. As mentioned, you can also do spin outs or even just run with the ball and immediately transition to the set position in an athletic stance. With the first progression, they just work on the quick stop without the ball. The dribbling progression starts at about 2:10.
 Shooting Drill #2 - Teaches Players To Extend Their Legs to Jump When Ball Is At Set Point Above, we practiced loading the legs and raising the ball to the set position. Now, we have the next stage of the shot. Thatâs where you extend your legs and finish the shooting release from the set position. The height of your set position can range from the shoulder level to your head level. From the set position, great shooters extend their legs and finish their shot release. From this position, you extend your legs and shoot the ball at the same time. This gets your body accustomed to feeling the position of when you should extend your legs and shoot the ball from the set point. [Here you can see a video of the drill in action](. Here is a question we received about game-based drills⦠Reader Comment: Hello, Love your site and resources, I have a question about this resource - my son just turned 15, played on Freshman team, did well in all areas, but his best skill in practice and his own work is shooting. He is not nearly as aggressive as he needs to be, given his shooting ability (60-70% from 3) in drills. In addition, he can get to the rim from the 3 point line, and has attacking moves that heâs learned through training sessions, but does not use them in games. This summer he wants to work on these things - would [this resource (game-based drills)]( help or are there others that you would recommend. He goes to a very competitive all boys Catholic school with multiple D-1 players, so he will have to get over this obstacle of better translating the skills he has to the court. I coached for many years, and this would be a great resource for a team - is there enough for an individual to gain from given what I set forth above? Many thanks,
 Great question! I definitely think so. These are the exact drills I would want my kids to do in the offseason, but it would depend on how you utilize the [game-based drills](. You definitely need one other player to compete against him in the 1v1 drills. Three more players would be ideal, so you can use the 1v2 and 2v2 drills as well. If you're going to have your son sit down and watch the videos, I could see him getting bored. The video definitely was developed for parents and coaches as the audience. There are a lot of coaching tips to better utilize the drills and coach within the drills. However, there are some kids who are bball junkies and love everything... including coaching videos. There are also 10 sample practice plans with 6 drills each. You could easily use these for workouts or mix them into a workout. As for getting your son to be more aggressive and actually implement the skills into the game, I'd also check out [Don Kelbick's Attack & Counter System](. When I train players, I start with the Attack & Counter methods to instill scoring moves (footwork), mentality, and aggressiveness. The way it simplifies footwork for moves and accelerates learning is also remarkable. After I teach those methods with 1v0 drills, I start implementing game-based drills.
