Small-sided games, game-based drills, or drills with defenders… 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and other variations... are a great tool for skill development! It's a great way to teach players how to make better decisions and learn how to attack defenders in game-like situations. When used appropriately, this translates to better performance in games. In fact, I’ve spoken with many successful coaches who use them almost exclusively for every practice they have. However, there is a dark side to game-based drills that could be holding your players back… Like me, you might’ve noticed something else… Let’s say that we’re working on making the crossover dribble move quicker, faster, and more explosive. If you immediately have them practice against live defenders, players are going to struggle immensely or even stay within their comfort zone. There will be little to no improvement on the technical aspect of the skills! And if you compound this over time, it can really put your players behind your competition. However… When you practice this skill for a few minutes in a non-competitive environment FIRST… an environment without defenders... This gives the player the time to mentally and physically work through the skill. They start to improve. They start to gain confidence. Then later on, even in the same workout or practice, you can have them practice against a reference defense (dummy defense) then even live defenders. This is when you get results! The defenders give you immediate feedback on what works and what doesn’t. Now, you can go back and practice without defense to improve these other aspects of the skill. After that, you can practice against live defenders again. Then you can rinse and repeat this cycle on your way to mastering the skills. You might be wondering now… Okay. That makes sense. But what moves and skills should I be teaching? What are the most important ones? What are the most effective ones? And how do I teach these skills and moves? How do I break them down? This is where [Becoming a 3-Dimensional Scorer]( comes in… This program shows you how to teach the important skills and moves to your players. It shows you the most effective scoring moves and how to easily break down each move. That way, your players quickly grasp it and apply it to game situations. Becoming a 3-D Scorer does NOT include a bunch of game-based drills (1v1, 2v2, 3v3). We have other programs for that. This is all about teaching the technical skills, so players shoot better and score more with lethal moves off the catch, off the dribble, and around the basket. And if you take action right now...
