- If You’re Looking for More Shooting Instruction…  --------------------------------------------------------------- How To Fix Mindless Shooting Reps Ages: Youth, High School, College/Pro
Audience: Parents, Coaches, Players In a previous email, we talked about [why your shooting drills don’t work.]( Even if you change your shooting drills and follow the advice, you can still fall into the trap of going through the motion and taking mindless shooting repetitions. Your goal is to be engaged and focused on every repetition. Many refer to this as deliberate practice. When your mind starts wondering and you start thinking about other things, this does not result in the best repetitions to try to replicate a game. Three ways to fix this are to: - Vary your shots between repetitions - different location, different cut, off the dribble vs. off the catch.
- Â
- Shoot against live defenders. You can play 1v1 or even 2v2 and 3v3 if you have enough players.
- Â
- Vary your shooting workouts - work on different types of shots day to day… fast break, down screens, flare cuts, ball screens, etc. However, another great way to eliminate mindless reps with block practice where you shoot the same shot over and over (block practice)… Play Beat the Pro Player starts with 5 points at the start of the drill. Scoring is: Miss is +1, make is -1. The Objective is to get to 0 before getting to 10. You can play this game with any type of shot or shooting drill -- free throws, wing shots, shooting off the dribble, etc. You can also adjust the starting score and have the players start at 10... trying to get to 0 before reaching 20. This is a great way to keep focused on every repetition to maximize your improvement.  --------------------------------------------------------------- If You’re Looking for More Shooting Instruction… We have different [basketball camps]( that fit different needs that you can read about below. We also have our [Breakthrough Shooting and Scoring System]( that takes you step by step through the shooting process. You can progress from learning basic shooting mechanics to learning high-level scoring moves. And some people do both. They attend the Breakthrough Camps and get a copy of the Shooting and Scoring System. Here are some camps you might attend... Need To Improve Your Shooting Mechanics? Shooting Camps - This is an intensive shooting camp primarily focused on developing your shooting mechanics, a quick release, and a shooter’s mentality. If you’re struggling with your shooting mechanics and consistency, this is highly recommended. Need To Get Better At Shooting In Games or Against Defenders? If you have proficient shooting mechanics, but need to get better at shooting in games or against defenders, any of the following camps are great! Shooting, Ball Handling, and Scoring Camps - Each day there is time spent on shooting mechanics. Additionally, this camp spends a lot of time teaching you how to attack and shoot against pressure in 1v1 and 2v2 situations. Ball Handling, Shooting, and Decision Training (BDT) Camps - These camps are designed by Chris Oliver and provide plenty of training drills that are designed around the premise of ensuring that every repetition is engaged. If you haven’t attended one of these camps, we highly advise you do. Elite Skills and Playmaking Camps - If you want to develop an elite skill set, high level decision making, and top-notch scoring ability, this is another great camp. You will play in plenty of 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5 situations. This teaches you how to become a true playmaker.
