Audience: Coaches, Parents, Players One of the most common scoring situations is when an offensive player gets a slight advantage on the defender. However, what you do at this moment separates the high-level scorers from players who donât score that often. This is a great 1v1 drill that gets players a ton of reps in this situation. Itâs also great as the position of the defender will vary⦠just like a game. Sometimes, the defender will be right on the offensive playerâs hip. Other times, the defender may be slightly behind. And if the offensive player doesnât explode or maintain control of the defender, the defender will recover back in front of the offensive player. These are all great situations to practice scoring against. Additionally, there is an advanced variation where the offensive player has to score against a second defender rotating over from weakside help. Question: My youth players wonât pass the ball! Do you have any drills to teach my players to break this habit? - Jeff T. Joeâs Response: I wrote about this experience before and what I did in [this article](. I have posted it below as well. In the summer of 2009, I was asked to help coach some games for a 3rd grade boysâ team. We didnât have any practices. It was just a fun way for the boys to gain experience. I immediately noticed one terrible habit. There was practically no passing and teamwork. A few players dominated the ball. And the players would always ask how many points they scored during and after the game. Surprise. Surprise. Right? Anybody who has coached youth basketball knows this is no surprise. Well, I knew we had to change this right away. So I started tracking a new passing statistic. However, I knew I had to track something a little different than the typical assist or the Gretzky (Hockey assist) that I had tracked with high school teams. I didnât think thereâd be enough assists and Gretzkys due to the low scoring nature of 3rd grade basketball. So I only tracked one stat during the games... The number of âgood passesâ made by each player. During the first game, there was some interest. A few boys would come over and ask how many good passes there were. At the time, I thought, âIs this hopeless?â So I thought⦠Well, I need to turn this into a big deal. So I did three things. - Every time a player came out, I highlighted how many good passes they had so far. - I tried to compliment as many good passes as possible during the game. âGreat pass, Jaden.â And I made a big deal out of the really good passes. - After the game, I never talked about the outcome of the game. I just talked about how many good passes there were. By the third game, there was a monumental shift. More and more players wanted to know how many âgood passesâ they made. And by the last few games, players would sprint over to me to check on their good passes. Thatâs all they cared about. It actually started to work too well. A few players even passed up open shots to get a good pass. So I had to create a new rule⦠If you donât take an open shot or scoring opportunity, you sit on the bench. I didnât even have to do that once because they quickly got the point. The experiment worked out great and I know Iâll continue to use it. I hope that you can use it to help your teamâs passing as well.  --------------------------------------------------------------- This Gives âSudden Surge of Life Into Practicesâ Here is some recent feedback on [Game-Based Drills System (50+ Drills) with Nate Sanderson.]( âSo far after implementing these drills to the squad, there has been a sudden surge of life back into my practices. The boys really are into the specifics of how they should react to the different looks they get in games. I feel like itâs the closest to game-like weâve experienced. They are instantly building confidence and thatâs just what we need right now. Glad I bought it!â - Eric Chizer from Honolulu, Hawaii  All the Best, - Joe Haefner
