In previous emails, we talked about building players’ confidence. I said that the #1 best way to improve confidence is to improve skill and that’s true. But confidence isn’t the only part of the “mental game” of basketball. Here are a few more of the mental skills that can set players apart: - Reading opposing players to spot tendencies and weaknesses - Pushing through fatigue - Keeping a clear head even when intensity or physicality increase - Playing in a hostile environment - Overcoming butterflies before a game - Positive visualization - Wanting the challenge of guarding the opposing team’s best players - Staying calm during high-pressure situations (like last-second free throws) - …and many more! These are skills and mentalities that great players develop over time to widen the gap between themselves and their competition. But this is rarely something coaches focus on or give specific instruction on. Most players are expected to figure out the mental game on their own…even though it’s not quite that simple. This is why it’s important to introduce your kids to coaches who understand BOTH sides of the game -- physical and mental. That way your kids develop the skills they need to confidently perform… AND the mental strength to make the most of their skills. This is a part of our [Breakthrough Skill Development Camps]( because we recognize that skills alone will only take players so far. And because we have such a low player-to-coach ratio, camp attendees get the personalized instruction and attention they need to improve ALL aspects of their game. So if you’re considering signing up for a camp this summer, I encourage you to consider our Skill Development camps as a way to develop your child’s complete game.
