And running was literally that, I was putting a foot in front of the other and moving forward. I ran for a decade, until they finally convicted the man who killed my mom – and then I ran a whole marathon. Seven years ago, today, I stood at the starting line in freezing temperatures and sleet. I had raised over $30,000 for Brady while I trained, and as I ran 26 miles on what would have been my mom’s 70th birthday, I finally realized the next right thing to do: Use my voice to become a leader in this movement. Brady allowed me to do that, and since then I haven’t stopped using my experience as a survivor to work toward ending the gun violence epidemic that took my mom.
