After a gunman with an assault weapon killed seven people and injured 48 others in Highland Park, IL, last Fourth of July, the state took critical action to ban deadly weapons of war. Brady helped Illinois become the tenth state to ban assault weapons, making millions of people safer. The City of Naperville, IL, took its own action to protect its community against being the next to make headlines: The City banned the commercial sale of assault weapons, making a proactive move to save lives instead of waiting for tragedy. Yet, in the face of lifesaving progress in Illinois, the gun lobby made a characteristically egregious move, immediately challenging first the ban on commercial sales of assault weapons in Naperville, IL, and then the assault weapons ban in the State – but Brady was ready for them. Brady is representing the City of Naperville, IL, as it defends its ban on assault weapons against the gun lobby’s dangerous interpretation of the Second Amendment. The gun lobby has tried twice to make an emergency request to the Supreme Court to end the assault weapons bans – but now, for the second time, the Court has denied this request without a noted dissent from any of the Justices.
