THIS is how we hold the gun industry accountable for gun violence

It was 10 years ago this week that Kirsten pulled over to admire a scenic lighthouse view off Highway 101 in Oregon. That was her last journey. Kirsten was shot and killed by a stranger who should have never had access to a firearm. The shooter had a history of mental illness and had been previously involved in a gun-related crime. Despite this, he was able to purchase two firearms online using his mother’s credit card and have her pick up the firearms on his behalf. The shooter used the internet intentionally because he was afraid he might not pass a background check. And through this illegal straw purchase, he was able to obtain the firearms that he went on to use in the killing of Kirsten Englund. Kirsten’s family wanted to make a difference, to save other families from their mother’s fate. That’s why they partnered with Brady to file suit against the gun dealers who negligently sold the weapons used to kill Kirsten. And after a lengthy court battle, we won landmark rulings to hold the dealers accountable — setting life-saving precedent that is still used today. Not only did the Englund family receive a financial settlement, but the gun dealers agreed to reform their business practices to prevent similar tragedies. This victory sent a message to firearm businesses across the country: That if they irresponsibly sell guns, they will be held accountable and forced to pay. And that means we are all a lot safer.
