PLUS: Testimony in Senate Judiciary Committee & Brady Legal updates {NAME}, End Family Fire, Brady

PLUS: Testimony in Senate Judiciary Committee & Brady Legal updates {NAME}, End Family Fire, Brady’s safe gun storage program, JUST launched a new public service announcement (PSA), “Prepare for Misuse.” The [latest PSA]( shows how safe firearm storage can prevent fatal outcomes, expanding the program’s focus by depicting multiple forms of gun violence — including unintentional shootings, firearm suicides, and school shootings. The new effort also highlights the important role gun owners play in gun violence prevention and encourages a national dialogue around safe firearm storage practices. These are proven strategies to prevent family fire. [Family fire]( refers to a shooting caused by someone having access to a gun from the home when they shouldn’t have it. This includes children as well as those who display behavior that indicates they could harm themselves or others. [The new End Family Fire PSA will run nationwide across digital outlets and on TV, accompanied by out-of-home collateral like billboards — so make sure to be on the lookout. In the meantime, will you join me in watching and sharing this life-saving resource?]( [WATCH AND SHARE!]( We created “Prepare for Misuse” in partnership with the Ad Council because each day, more communities are being impacted by family fire. Already, 4.6 million children live in homes with unlocked and loaded guns and 60% of gun deaths are by suicide. With more than 400 million guns in the U.S., we knew that gun owners must be part of the conversation to address this crisis. Our PSA aims to help reduce these numbers and engage gun owners in practicing safe firearm storage — which means storing firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. In doing so, we can help keep our communities safe. I know this resource will help save countless lives, {NAME}. According to an Ad Council study, more than half of gun owners or adults in gun-owning households who are aware of the End Family Fire campaign report that they have taken steps to store their firearms more safely. So, simply by sharing, you, {NAME}, will help prevent family fire and save lives. [WATCH NOW]( [SHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA]( In solidarity, Colleen Creighton Director, End Family Fire   Brady Testifies Before U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Last week, Brady’s [Combating Crime Guns]( Program Manager Steve Lindley testified at the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, "Protecting Public Safety After New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen." Steve worked in law enforcement for three decades, overseeing the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Firearms, the Department’s Division of Law Enforcement, and he served as the chief of the California Bureau of Firearms. Steve used this experience to speak about the life-saving efficacy of California’s gun laws and the dangerous implications of the Supreme Court's ruling in NYSRA v Bruen. This decision has the potential to upend hundreds of gun safety laws and allows more Americans to carry concealed firearms in public spaces. His testimony drew attention to the grave impact this decision has on public safety, including for law enforcement: “As a former cop, special agent, and law enforcement executive, it is clear to me that it will be significantly harder for law enforcement to protect the public and it will make their jobs much more dangerous." Steve made clear that if we truly want to protect public safety, we must establish reasonable, common-sense gun safety laws — not roll them back. [We thank the Senate Judiciary Committee for holding this hearing and inviting Steve to join them. We at Brady will continue to fight for public safety and are working harder than ever to protect gun laws in light of the Bruen decision — and you can join us.]( [LEARN MORE ABOUT BRUEN](   Seven Years Have Passed Since the Unintentional Shooting of J.R. Gustafson — Brady Legal Continues to Demand Justice Monday marked seven years since 13-year-old J.R. Gustafson was unintentionally shot and killed. On behalf of J.R. and his family, Brady Legal sued the gun manufacturer claiming that this tragedy could have been prevented had the manufacturer included common-sense safety features on the firearm — including a magazine disconnect safety feature that disables the gun when the magazine is removed. So, why hasn’t J.R.’s case been resolved yet? Gun industry special protections. An unjust federal law called the [Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA)]( has been interpreted to give the gun industry special, unparalleled protection from civil liability — unlike any other industry in America. But in August 2022, an appeals court majority found that PLCAA does not apply or that PLCAA was unconstitutional, reversing an earlier trial court ruling to dismiss the case under PLCAA. As we await next steps, please join us in honoring J.R.’s life with action.
