We created Firearm Suicide Prevention Day to educate Americans about the growing firearm suicide crisis and promote the importance of storing firearms safely and securely — which means locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition — as an essential component of suicide prevention. Firearm suicide is a growing public health crisis in America. On average, we lose 65 people to firearm suicide every single day — which is more than are lost to firearm murders and unintentional shootings combined. More than half of all gun deaths are suicides. Research shows this outsized epidemic is partly fueled by unsecured firearms. Jim was serving as White House Press Secretary to President Reagan when he was shot in the head during the 1981 attempted assassination on the president. After the shooting, Jim and his wife, Sarah, dedicated their lives to strengthening our nation's gun laws. They first set their sights on passing the Brady Bill, the first federal law to require background checks for gun sales. It took Jim and Sarah over six years to win the Brady Bill, which President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1993. But they didn't stop there. The Bradys also helped win the passage of the 1994 federal assault weapons ban alongside then-senator Joe Biden. Today, it's one of our organization's top priorities to [reinstate]( the assault weapons ban, which is [proven]( to have saved countless lives.
