PLUS: FTC petition and Sacramento, CA, shooting Homemade, untraceable “ghost guns” pose one of the greatest threats to our public safety, {NAME}. Over the pandemic, these fully functioning firearms have risen in sales and proliferated across the United States, causing senseless bloodshed in our communities and schools. Just this week, a man in New York unintentionally shot and injured himself with a ghost gun, and months ago, a Maryland high school student brought a ghost gun to school and shot and injured a fellow classmate. Tragically, the violence does not end there. Ghost guns are quickly becoming the weapon of choice for prohibited gun purchasers because they require NO Brady Background Check. They’re easier to assemble than a piece of furniture — built with kits and parts easily purchased online — and they undermine almost every gun safety law on the books. But right now, at Brady, we’re taking action against untraceable ghost guns to save lives. Just yesterday, after months of advocacy, we declared victory after a bill to ban ghost guns became law in Maryland. In the courts, Brady Legal filed the nation’s first civil lawsuit against the ghost gun industry, representing the victims and survivors of a horrific shooting rampage involving a homemade AR-15-style rifle. We also recently helped pass FIVE landmark local ordinances to ban ghost guns in California — the first local bans of their kind in the country. And at the federal level, we expect a decision soon in response to calls on the ATF to sensibly regulate ghost guns. [As you can see, {NAME}, we’re working tirelessly across Congress, the courts, and our communities to combat ghost guns and save lives — and we won’t give up. But we cannot do this vitally important work alone. We need support from dedicated grassroots supporters like you. Please, will you rush a gift to Brady right now? Your gift today will help save lives.]( [DONATE ]( Thank you for your support,Team Brady   We’re Demanding the FTC Investigate the Firearm Industry’s Dangerous Marketing Practices This week, we took major action against the multi-billion-dollar firearm industry. Alongside our partners at March For Our Lives and Giffords, we filed a petition demanding that the firearm industry be investigated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for unfair, deceptive, and illegal advertising practices. For far too long, the gun industry has relied on false messaging to sell its products. While they’ve claimed that buying a gun will make you and your home safer, research tells us the opposite: bringing a gun into the home makes everyone in the home less safe. What’s even more alarming is that, in recent years, the gun industry has doubled down on its false claims, targeting young people with advertisements to attract them to purchase military-style assault rifles. In turn, this has resulted in homicides, unintentional shootings, and some of the deadliest mass shootings in our nation’s history — all while the gun industry sells more guns than ever before. [The FTC has a duty to review these marketing tactics and act swiftly to stop them and help keep Americans safe. As we work to prevent more families from suffering because of irresponsible gun industry marketing practices, please read and share our exclusive in the New York Times.]( [READ NOW ]( Brady California Takes Swift Action Following the Deadly Sacramento, CA, Shooting Last Sunday morning, our nation once again awoke to dire headlines: Six people were shot and killed and 12 more were injured in Sacramento, CA. Brady California, led by Vice President of Organizing Shikha Hamilton, joined California lawmakers and advocates to honor the lives lost by taking action. Brady advocates join partners and California lawmakers California has led the nation in common-sense gun violence prevention policies and measures — and despite this tragedy — they’re working. While California saw a spike in gun violence like the rest of the country, our laws have kept those increases below the national average. Additionally, from 1993 through 2020, the firearm mortality rate in California declined by 51%. We must continue to demonstrate the leadership that the nation needs after this horrific mass shooting. It’s why Brady California is working tirelessly to pass our priority gun safety bills in the state legislature, which will honor the lives lost in Sacramento and help prevent any more senseless bloodshed — and we hope you’ll join us. [JOIN OUR NEW VOLUNTEER SESSION](   [RETWEET KRIS BROWN!](   Episode 179: Will Climate Change Increase Gun Violence? We know that gun violence is an [intersectional issue]( touching every part of American life. Studies now suggest that climate change can worsen gun violence rates, especially in communities that experience every day gun violence. To discuss the ways that climate change could worsen gun violence rates, and how we all can help combat that rise, we’re joined by Dr. Daniel Semenza, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice at Rutgers University. It’s Time to Ban Them]( Chicago Sun Times Following last Sunday's mass shooting in Sacramento, CA, that left six people dead and a dozen injured, Golden State Warrior’s head Steve Coach Kerr [called]( on elected officials to enact common-sense gun laws to prevent any more senseless gun violence. As a survivor of gun violence, Coach Kerr understands the pain and trauma families experience after a shooting. In 1984, his father was assassinated in a terrorist attack in Beirut. So when Coach Kerr takes a stand for gun safety, it’s not political — it's personal. We thank Coach Kerr for using his platform to bring attention to America’s gun violence epidemic. We’ve had enough thoughts and prayers and the time to act is NOW. We join Coach Kerr and call on all elected officials — from Congress to state houses across the country — to prioritize gun violence prevention legislation. It will help save lives.
