Suicide, intentional shootings, and unintentional shootings are all forms of family fire — which, tragically, accounts for more than HALF of all gun deaths in America. With an epidemic impacting so many Americans, especially the veteran community, it’s up to all of us — gun owners and non-gun owners alike — to help End Family Fire. In case you missed the hearing, here are 3 key points Ted explained about suicide and firearms: - Firearms are the method of suicide that result in death far more often than any other. Roughly 23,000 Americans will die by suicide using a firearm this year. Contrary to misconceptions about suicide being impulsive, most people who attempt suicide have thought about the plan and action well ahead of time. That means these tragedies are preventable — if we reduce access to lethal means. - When a person is at risk for suicide, an evidence-based strategy is to put as much time and distance between a person and a method as possible. - There is a false belief that if someone wants to die, they will end their life through any method possible. But means for suicide are rarely substituted: If a firearm is chosen, it is not easily substituted. The bottom line is that we can save countless lives by practicing and promoting safe firearm storage.
