I am a proud Wisconsinite and I am seeing the harsh truths of our country play out in my state.
Youâve probably seen the news. Last night, two people were shot and killed by a civilian armed with an AR-15-style assault rifle in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The victims were protesting the senseless police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot seven times in the back on Sunday evening. Blake was unarmed.
The 17-year-old shooter wasnât alone in his armed vigilantism. A militia group who call themselves Kenosha Guard, mobilized its members to defend the city from âevil thugs.â These armed vigilantes and extremists are threatening our citizens and we cannot allow more to die by their hands.
{NAME}, the confluence of systemic racism and easy access to guns is putting lives at risk. This is not just a Wisconsin problem, this is a national crisis that needs to be addressed immediately.
White Americans are being emboldened by Donald Trump to take up arms against their fellow citizens. Just two nights ago, Trump gave a national spotlight to the McCloskey's, the St. Louis couple who threatened Black Lives Matter protesters with semi-automatic weapons, by featuring them front and center at the RNC.
Letâs be clear: Hate and bigotry should not be armed. Especially not with AR-15-style assault rifles that are meant to kill as many people as possible. We must ask: How did this 17-year-old obtain a gun? Why are Trump and McConnell outright refusing to pass legislation to keep guns away from those who intend to cause harm?
Weâre fighting back with everything we have at Brady because white supremacist violence poses a lethal threat to all of our communities. Itâs time we push back and demand our legislators fight hate and ensure prohibited purchasers are never able to obtain a firearm. But we need to know youâre by our side on this critical issue, {NAME}:

Since 2011, there have been 17 white-supremacist-led mass shootings, from Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, to Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania â but Mitch McConnell has stonewalled EVERY piece of legislation that could help keep our communities safer from mass shootings. Trump and McConnell has proven time and again that they're in the pocket of the NRA and will stop at nothing to prevent common-sense bipartisan gun safety legislation from passing.
I am asking you to stand with me, Wisconsin, and Brady and speak out on this vital issue, our voices are stronger together. We cannot allow our country to be run by bigots wielding weapons of war. Please, will you sign your name now:
