{NAME}, Seven years ago today on July 20, 2012, a gunman opened fire in a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Twelve people were killed and 70 more were injured. Among those murdered was a 6-year-old girl. At the time, it was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. That’s in part because of the weapon the killer used: a military-style AR-15 rifle with an extended magazine. So many mass shooters in America arm themselves with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle because it’s a weapon designed for one reason: to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. There’s no reason deadly assault weapons like this should be easy to legally obtain. They were designed for war, to kill as many people as possible in a short amount of time. [Weapons like the AR-15 used in the Aurora shooting have no place on our streets. Will you sign our petition to Congress to demand a comprehensive ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines?]( Until we take action to put an end to these horrific mass shootings, nothing will change. Assault weapons are still perfectly legal for people to obtain with ease. And, as we’ve unfortunately witnessed in the years since the Aurora shooting, these tragedies are only going to get deadlier.
