Part of an alarming national trend, “rogue sheriffs” in New Mexico are outright refusing to enforce new state laws to prevent gun violence. [This Week in Brady News]( View this email as a [webpage]( We’re Shining a Light on the NRA’s Role Behind “Rogue Sheriffs” Part of an alarming national trend, “rogue sheriffs” in New Mexico are outright refusing to enforce new state laws to prevent gun violence. We believe the New Mexicans deserve to know why — so our legal team took action. We filed a public records request in New Mexico and waded through more than 1,615 pages of emails. Who did we find was effectively running the campaign against gun safety laws? The NRA. [Read our report.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- We Joined Rep. DeLauro for the Introduction of Ethan’s Law We were on Capitol Hill for the introduction of Ethan’s Law. This lifesaving bill would help prevent family fire by requiring all households with minors to store firearms according to state safety rules. It’s named after 15-year-old Ethan Song, who was killed while handling a gun at a neighbor’s house. A bill by the same name just passed the Connecticut legislature. We were proud to stand beside Ethan’s parents, Mark and Kristin Song, as well as Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Sen. Blumenthal, Newtown Action Alliance, and others for this important introduction. The Brady Campaign is excited to endorse three pro-gun violence prevention candidates in Virginia: Sen. Dick Saslaw for State Senate and Dan Helmer and Sheila Bynum-Coleman for the House of Delegates. These candidates are committed to expanding background checks, closing loopholes to firearm access, and passing common-sense gun safety laws to protect Virginians. [Read more in our press release.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- We Filed a Lawsuit Against a Wisconsin Gun Dealer Brady’s legal team filed a lawsuit in Wisconsin on behalf of Brandon Baranowski, a police officer who was shot and wounded with an illegally purchased gun in 2016. Our complaint argues that the gun dealer should have detected the straw purchase and refused the sale. This is one of many legal cases in which Brady is seeking justice for injured victims and their families by holding irresponsible gun dealers accountable. We’ve previously brought two successful lawsuits on behalf of four injured Milwaukee police officers against the top crime gun dealer in the country — one of which resulted in a $5.7 million verdict against the dealer. [Learn more about the new lawsuit.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Hero of the Week This week, the Brady Stockton (California) chapter was presented a Key to the City by Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs! Brady Stockton worked to create a bridge between community members and local police, inviting everyone to the table to find solutions to prevent gun violence. This is a tremendous honor, and it reflects the hard work being done by Brady leaders and gun violence prevention advocates across the city.
