Locking Up Guns Could Reduce Teen and Childhood Firearm Deaths by 33% [This Week in Brady News]( View this email as a [webpage]( Study: Locking Up Guns Could Reduce Teen and Childhood Firearm Deaths by 33% A study published this week proves that safe storage — the basis of our [End Family Fire]( program — would save hundreds of children's lives each year. The study, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics by the American Medical Association (AMA), found that if just 10 percent more households with children had locked up their guns, 50 more teens and children would be alive today. Bottom line: education about safe storage and family fire will save countless lives. Becerra. We’re arguing against efforts to overturn California’s recent assault weapon ban. Our brief urges the Court to consider the devastating health and economic effects that mass shootings have on survivors, friends, family members, their communities, and our country as a whole. Brady will continue to defend the laws enacted by state and local officials that protect citizens from assault weapons and their dangerous misuse. The case, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. City of New York, threatens to undermine and even reverse existing and proposed gun violence prevention laws across the country. Brady’s brief offers a creative approach that calls on the court to recognize the rights of Americans to live, enact the strong public safety laws they want and need, and reject dangerous pleas to expand Second Amendment rights. Brady remains committed to ensuring that communities across the country are free from gun violence, and that local and state governments have the ability to enact reasonable public safety laws. [Read the brief here.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Hero of the Week Kristin and Mike Song have tirelessly fought to pass gun safety legislation after their 15-year-old son, Ethan, was killed while handling a pistol at a neighbor’s house. On Tuesday, “Ethan’s Law” passed the Connecticut House with bipartisan support. This lifesaving legislation would require all firearms, loaded and unloaded, to be safely stored in homes occupied by minors. [Send a tweet thanking Ethan’s parents, Kristin and Mike Song, for spearheading this lifesaving legislation.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Brady in the News: Must-Reads & Listens [State trooper whose son, 4, fatally shot himself with his gun now on administrative leave]( ABC News [Retired officer sues gun store that sold weapon used against him two years later]( Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel [How 2020 candidates plan to tackle gun violence]( CNN [Ghost guns are everywhere in California]( The Trace [Gun bill provision restoring local control may be in jeopardy]( Nevada Current --------------------------------------------------------------- Brady Quote of the Week "The most important thing that parents can do if they choose to bring a gun into the home is to store it safely." — Kyleanne Hunter, Brady’s Vice President of Programs, in ABC New [SHARE ON TWITTER →]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Brady on Social Media: [Follow us on Facebook]( [Follow us on Twitter]( [Follow us on Instagram]( Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence 840 First Street, NE Suite 400 Washington, DC 20002 United States Paid for by the Brady Campaign.
