In between racist conspiracy theories and radical lies about “taking everyone’s guns away,” Donald Trump tried to claim that he doesn’t have anything to do with Project 2025 — a 900-page manifesto that was contributed to by 140 hand-picked members of his last administration, including six of his cabinet secretaries. We didn’t believe him and neither should you. If elected, Project 2025 and Agenda 47, which is Trump’s more official campaign platform, will become playbooks for his administration — and this should concern every American. Both paint a clear vision of the dystopian America Trump seeks to create, one with guns everywhere. Throughout his campaign, Trump has persistently called for arming school teachers. Project 2025 lays out a plan to make this vision a reality by, among other things, allowing states to use federal money currently allocated for low-income school districts to instead go towards arming teachers. This move would flood our schools with firearms and turn our teachers into armed guards — all of which would make our kids less safe. Project 2025 and Agenda 47 will also axe life-saving gun violence prevention laws across the country. Does your state have safe storage laws? What about universal background checks? Created by Brady in 2022, [Firearm Suicide Prevention Day]( was designed to draw attention to the crisis that is firearm suicide and the life-saving role of safe firearm storage. On average, we lose 74 people to firearm suicide every single day — which is more than are lost to firearm homicide and unintentional shootings combined. And these tragedies are becoming more common. Youth firearm suicide rates have risen 57% and this increase is even larger among Black youth, who have experienced a 183% rise in firearm suicide. We can help change this. In 75% of youth firearm suicides in which the gun storage method was identified, the gun was stored loaded and unlocked. By simply storing firearms safely — locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition — we can greatly reduce firearm suicide. Unfortunately, though, just 54% of new gun owners report storing all firearms in the home locked and unloaded. The news comes on the heels of a series of lawsuits, including [Brady’s successful lawsuit]( Polymer80, which was settled in February for $1.2 million. Brady represented the City of Baltimore as they sued Polymer80 for fueling gun violence in the city by manufacturing ghost guns – unserialized, untraceable firearms that can be purchased WITHOUT a background check. These guns are constructed from components purchased either as a kit or as separate pieces, intentionally evading gun laws. They are, by design, the weapon of choice for prohibited gun purchasers and make it extremely difficult for law enforcement to solve gun homicide cases. The end of Polymer80 is a victory not only for Baltimore but all Americans. It sends a clear message to the gun industry that if you act negligently and intentionally try to circumvent public safety laws, you will be held accountable. Since its expiration, we have seen assault weapons be used to devastate communities nationwide, including Sandy Hook, Buffalo, Uvalde, and now Apalachee High School in Georgia. In recognition of this anniversary, we are once again calling on Congress to ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. We know it can be done. Our namesakes, Jim and Sarah Brady, helped make history when they worked alongside then-Sen. Joe Biden to pass the first ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. And it saved lives — mass shooting fatalities plummeted by 70% in the 10 years the ban was in place. But after intense lobbying by the NRA and its allies, Congress allowed the ban to expire in 2004, and shootings with assault weapons have increased at terrifying rates. Enough is ENOUGH.
