I can't help but think of my own kids

When I see gun violence in the news, I can't help but think about my father, who was killed in a senseless act of gun violence when I was just 18. And I can't help but think of my own kids and grandkids and the danger they're in every single day. All across the country, kids are growing up in fear. They're learning how to muffle the sounds of their crying so a shooter won't be able to hear them, what furniture to use to barricade the doors, and where to hide in case someone comes into the classroom with a weapon of war. Friend, even though my kids are grown now, I can't help but wonder what I would have done if I saw one of my kids' schools on the news — or every parent's worst nightmare, getting the call saying one of them was shot. But I do know that far too many families have already gone through the unimaginable fear, pain, and grief of a school shooting. Families deserve to prepare for back to school without also preparing for the possibility of a mass shooting. Kids deserve to learn and play at school without the fear of gun violence.
