The tragedy in Orlando shook the nation, and we're still reeling years later. {NAME}, Seven years ago, on June 12, 2016, 49 people were murdered, and 53 more were wounded when a gunman opened fire in Pulse nightclub in Orlando. It was one of the worst mass shootings in our nation's history and a horrifying attack on the LGBTQ+ community. Pulse nightclub was a place where people could go to unwind, dance, and feel safe to celebrate and express themselves with their friends and family. NAME, we cannot honor the victims without action — and we cannot move forward without recognizing the increasing hostility and attacks on the LGBTQ+ community in recent years. Tragically, there have been thousands of mass shootings in the United States since the Pulse nightclub. In 2023 alone, there have been over 280 mass shootings — more than the number of days this year. Following the shooting in Orlando, then-Florida Governor Rick Scott took limited action by signing a law raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21. Since then, Ron DeSantis and the extreme Florida legislature have ripped apart that progress by signing bills that make accessing firearms easier. It's unacceptable. While corrupt politicians side with the gun lobby and choose profits over people, communities — especially marginalized communities — continue to be torn apart by rampant gun violence. When extremists have easy access to guns, marginalized, vulnerable people and communities are often their targets. We are working to build a country in which people can live without fear — that means one in which Americans can freely express themselves and live safely from gun violence. It is possible, and we won't stop working until our communities are safe. Thank you for your time, Ashley Lantz, Executive Director Brady PAC Extremists like Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell are blocking action on gun safety policies at every turn. We need your help to support our gun safety candidates, so we can protect our Senate majority and retake the House in 2024.
