We need to close the Charleston Loophole "FBI gun seizure orders from people who fail background checks hit historic rates" – USA Today Background checks MUST be completed on all sales before any person is able to obtain a firearm. [If you agree, add your name to call on Congress to close loopholes in our system that allow people to obtain firearms before a background check is completed →]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( In 2020 and 2021 alone, more than 11,500 seizure orders were issued by the FBI for guns sold to prohibited buyers. This is the highest number at any time in recorded history. Why are prohibited buyers able to obtain these weapons? The Charleston Loophole. Our law currently states that if the FBI does not complete a background check within three days, gun dealers are legally able to proceed with the purchase. Given the increased volume of gun sales, this means many people are slipping through the cracks and obtaining firearms who should not be allowed to. The Charleston Loophole is named because of the mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015. The shooter was prohibited from buying a firearm but was able to acquire his gun before the FBI completed his background check. This perpetrator then went on to use that gun to murder nine churchgoers. Closing this loophole is a common-sense solution to keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous people and prevent incidents like the Charleston mass shooting from happening ever again. But we need Congress to act NOW.
