And more than 80 percent of suicides by children involve a family member's gun. Having guns at home increases the risk of tragedy, but there are simple steps individuals and lawmakers can take to reduce these risks – including safe storage laws. Safe storage laws require guns to be stored, locked, and unloaded when anyone prohibited from possessing a firearm is in the gun owner's home – and two-thirds of gun owners support this kind of legislation.
