[View web version]( [It's All Downhill. The latest from the slopes of New England and beyone by Matt Pepin] Friday, October 26 | [Follow Matt Pepin on Twitter]( SKI SEASON IS HERE Two New England ski areas will have their earliest openings ever on Saturday. Mount Snow in Vermont, which has been around for 64 years, and Wildcat in New Hampshire, which has a 61-year history, will both kick off their seasons thanks to powerful snowmaking systems. “It feels great to get people out here this early,” Jamie Storrs, the spokesman for Mount Snow, told Boston Globe correspondent Andres Picon this week. “There’s a lot of pent-up demand; people haven’t been on skis since April. People are pretty fired up to be able to ski in October.” Sunday River in Maine and Killington in Vermont both opened Ot. 19. [Read Picon's full story at BostonGlobe.com.]( CLICKWORTHY FINGER ON THE PULSE: The closer we get to ski season, the more I find myself consuming ski content, and a short essay in the latest Freeskier magazine was particularly enjoyable. Sam Taggart shares thoughts and musings from the perspective of a ski area parking lot worker, [and it's a thoughtful take on the ebb and flow of a ski day.]( IN HER OWN WORDS: Lindsey Vonn, who is four victories shy of tying Ingemar Stenmark's record for World Cup wins, explained her decision to retire from ski racing in a piece [for Sports Illustrated](. Vonn plans to stop competing after this season, but is hopeful of both making a run at Stenmark's record and racing in a men's race this season. She also said her "legacy will be about more than skiing." WATCH LIST: A few short ski videos popped up on my skiing Twitter list this week that are worth sharing. I much prefer short videos like these to full-length ski movies, as they provide wonderful and digestable lunchtime diversions. • [X Games star Henrik Harlaut's "The Regiment"]( debuted a few weeks ago at a film festival, according to Freeskier. • The latest installment of "Return of the Turn" from Ski Magazine [features Marcus Caston exploring Iceland on skis](. • [DPS Skis released "The Abbey,"]( which has a mini-narrative device to frame some truly amazing skiing. NO-GO: Granite Gorge in New Hampshire apparently will not open for skiing this season, and instead will focus on tubing and cross-country skiing, [according to a report on the New England Ski Industry website](. NESI also [has an update on the progress of lift installation projects]( at various New England ski areas, complete with many photos. GOOD ADVICE: There's no doubt a significant portion of ski media targets or features men, so it's great that [websites like Wendy Clinch's The Ski Diva]( exist. A recent post [headlined "Things every woman skier should know"]( was a perfect example of the kind of high-quality content you'll find there. Other top-notch ski blogs/websites/publications produced by or for women: [The Brave Ski Mom]( [Ski Maven]( and [VT Ski + Ride](. [Subscribe to BostonGlobe.com]( [Like It's All Downhill?
