Dan egan pays tribute to a ski film legend
After news emerged last week that ski film legend Warren Miller had passed away at age 93, my thoughts immediately turned to Dan Egan, a Boston native who now lives in New Hampshire and appeared in 12 of his movies.
Dan is a filmmaker himself, and he considers Miller a mentor who showed him the art of film production and the business of film distribution, and also taught him how to narrate his films.
So it made sense to ask Dan, who has been a Globe correspondent for years, if he was interested in writing an appreciation. He agreed, and I think it's brilliant.

ski areas on the bubble
There are five New England ski areas whose futures remain uncertain, according to the New England Ski Industry website -- Connecticut's Woodbury, Maine's Saddleback, Massachusetts' Ski Blandford, and New Hampshire's The Balsams and Tenney Mountain.
Details on each are available [in a recent posting on the website]( but of the five, only Tenney plans to open this season. Here's hoping for the best.
SUPER SUNDAY AND SKIING
Two things to share related to Super Bowl Sunday and skiing.
SUPER DEALS: Eric Wilbur [reports for Metro.us on all the deals to be had if you're thinking about pregaming on the slopes](. Ski areas are well aware of the impact the game has on ski participation, so they're trying to make it worth your while.
DURING THE GAME: With NBC as the broadcaster for the Super Bowl, you can be sure they'll be setting their promotional machine for the Olympics to full blast. Two commercials feature the top names in American skiing -- Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn -- and both are already out.
Vonn's [traces her rise from skiing as a child to the top of the World Cup standings]( where she remains as the women's all-time leader in World Cup victories.
Shiffrin's [tells the story of how she was inspired by the words of former ski racer Heidi Voelker]( who once signed a poster for Shiffrin like this: “Dream big, Mikaela, and always be faster than the boys.”
Speaking of the olympics ...
Two things on the upcoming Olympics:
IT'S ALL DOWNHILL PROGRAMMING NOTE: My esteemed colleague Hayden Bird of Boston.com will be taking over It's All Downhill for the next three weeks while I am on a special Olympics assignment for the Globe. Hayden is top-notch writer who loves skiing as much as I do, so you're in good hands.
OLYMPICS NEWSLETTER: The Globe is launching a free Olympics newsletter that will feature original reports from Korea as well as top headlines. [You can sign up now here](. The first one goes out Tuesday.
news & notes
THE GRANITE STATE SKI CUP : Karolyn Castaldo of Ski New Hampshire provided the photo above and this dispatch from a new event held this year at Cranmore Mountain: "The fastest elected official overall was Gov. Chris Sununu (pictured above in red jacket), the fastest snowboarding elected official was representative David Binford (who is also a Ragged Mountain Resort employee), and the fastest skiing elected official besides the governor is representative Frank Sapareto. The field was also populated with general managers from Waterville Valley Resort, Cannon Mountain, Cranmore Mountain Resort, Gunstock Mountain Resort, King Pine at Purity Spring Resort, and Pats Peak."
KING OF THE HILL: Magic Mountain in Vermont promoted its "Master of the Mountain" event March 3 as "the ultimate challenge," which immediately made me think this somehow invoved Frisbees. In fact, it's a combo race that combines freeride and giant slalom skiing. [Sign up or get more details on the area's website](.

The annual Jimmy Fund Snow Challenge fundraiser will be held at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford, Mass., on Feb. 10 -- a great event for a great cause.
