Hi, itâs Brody Ford in New York. Spam texts may finally start going away. But first... Three things you need to know today: ⢠Nvidia [stunned]( with a strong quarterly revenue forecast
⢠Ride-hailing company Grab is [closer to profit](
⢠Amazon wants to [broadcast Nascar]( Wrong number Spammy texts have become a fact of life. Hereâs one I got last week: âHi Luca, this is my number, please remember to save it, we will meet at the golf course tomorrow, and talk about cooperation by the way.â Obviously Iâm not Luca, and if I were to reply saying âwrong number,â Iâd end up on their sucker list and may be prompted into [some kind of cryptocurrency-facilitated scam](. Sometimes the opener is simpler and perhaps more ominous like, âhi.â Americans [lost $330 million]( to text message scams last year, with complaints to the Federal Communications Commission about the schemes jumping [500% between 2015 and 2022](. But the era might be coming to a close. Mass-messaging services are being pushed to crack down on shady texters by new wireless carrier rules. [Twilio Inc.](bbg://securities/twlo), known for facilitating business texts like Uber ride updates and DoorDash delivery notifications, is kicking users off its platform at the end of the month who havenât registered with [a new industry database that vets users with a âTrust Score.â]( Once implemented across the industry, the new registration standard could cut down spam by 90%, said Twilio Chief Executive Officer Jeff Lawson in an interview. Carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon have increased costs on unregistered traffic to accelerate the transition, and are expected to announce a new deadline to meet the standard in 2024 after pushing back an earlier March date. Cloud texting services are pushing users toward the new standard, though few have begun cracking down on noncompliance. Some are just making money by continuing to facilitate spam texting, Twilioâs Lawson said. His company expects to lose as much as $40 million of potential sales through the rest of the year after booting unregistered texters off the platform. RingCentral Inc., another texting service, isnât allowing new unregistered customers, but hasnât set a deadline for booting current ones, saying, âAny arbitrary deadline would most strongly penalize legitimate customers who follow the rules.â Most forms of communication go through a high-spam era before getting cleaned up. Email felt borderline unusable in the early 2000s, but today Gmail does a decent job of filtering out the things I donât want. Robocalls were an epidemic a few years back, but have dropped significantly following new regulations, according to [a report from the Public Interest Research Group](. Itâll become harder to text potential marks soon. Of course, scammers might just move on to newer and less-regulated social platforms. âHello,How are you today?â read a message I received this week from an unfamiliar âBusiness Accountâ on WhatsApp. â[Brody Ford](mailto:bford61@bloomberg.net) The big story Nvidiaâs chips have surged in popularity with the rise of AI, and the company â already a star in the market â continues to [stun investors]( with demand for its products.
