In recent years, demand for bond duration seems to have moved in lock-step with the stock rally -- either as investors use safe assets to hedge any sell-off in risk or as multi-asset managers rebalance portfolios. Whenever U.S. stocks sit near record highs and volatility across yield products stays low, fixed income seems to be especially in vogue. What’s more, equities are rallying against a backdrop of thin liquidity. JPMorgan calculates that the average market depth this year for the S&P 500 futures contract is close to last year’s average, which itself was close to historical lows. That leaves risk markets especially vulnerable if central banks fail to meet high expectations -- boosting the appeal of high-grade debt anew. It all makes projections that U.S. Treasuries could trade with a [zero](-percent handle if things actually go bad in the real economy or financial markets sound not-so-crazy.
