Hey {NAME}, Today I’d like to share a few priceless lessons that I learned in the last 6 months. On 22nd March 2019, I launched my [content writing service](, and we made $10,000 in just 26 days. I’ve been an active blogger since 2012, and many people in my contact list had faith in my blogging skills. As soon as I launched my content writing services, they immediately became my customers. I was lucky to have awesome friends who believed in me and my profession. Moreso, as we started to expand our business, we made a lot of money in the last 6 months. However, during these months, I had to face many ups and downs which taught me 6 priceless lessons. Today we are going to learn more about these lessons so that you don't make these mistakes when you start your business. Let's start, shall we? 1. You Cannot Run a Business Without a System. I know you might have heard this a thousand times, but the reality is: you learn to do things right when you do them. At first, I ran my content writing service without a system in place. For the first 4 months, I did everything on my own: hiring, firing, managing, assigning tasks, and everything related to content writers. I took it upon myself to talk to clients, doing keyword research, create a content outline, and more. Soon enough, I was exhausted and burned out. At this stage, I realized that maybe this business is not for me. One day I called a good friend of mine (Udit Goenka) and told him everything. We had a 2-hour call at midnight and it gave me a lot of clarity. That’s when I realized: I didn’t have to do everything on my own. I needed help, so I hired keyword researchers, content planning experts, content managers, editors, and other professionals who I needed to make everything go smoothly. Now I have a system, and everyone has their place and responsibilities in my company. In October, we’re planning to promote our content writing service once again. Now we are ready to produce and process as much as 2 million words a month. 2. You Need Automation Tools Automation is the heart of any business. For the first 2 months, we struggled to find the right tools to help us to manage our team of content writers. I was looking for a tool to help us assign tasks to writers, track their writing progress, and ultimately help us to deliver the right content to clients. I tried every project management and team management tool in the market. Probably more than 30 different tools. Sure enough, we found the right automation tool for us: Monday.com. It had everything we expected and needed; their pricing structure worked really great for us. So, we opted for the premium plan and started using it intensely. Now we have 40+ writers and 30+ clients using this app and our business is running smoothly. 3. Don't Hire People Who Don’t Have Enough Experience For the last 2 years, I’ve repeated the mistake of hiring people who had less than 2 years of experience, and guess what? They screwed up my clients. I agree with the fact that everyone has to start somewhere, but they must be willing to learn and improve at the same time. In my case, when we found mistakes in their content, they got angry and defensive. Many of our writers stopped working with us because our clients rejected their articles and we didn't pay them. Unfortunately, it’s a vicious circle. I think anyone in this business can relate to this equation: A Happy Client = A Paid Writer. It's always better to hire experienced people and pay them a bit more rather than waste a lot of time and lose clients. 4. Don’t Cut Your Business’ ‘Circulation Flow’ You shouldn't stop the lead flow when your business is at a good earning stage. I made this mistake. In August, we received an order of 700,000+ words; we stopped looking for other clients and regretted it later. In our case, we didn't have enough writers to produce the amount of content they needed. But rather than saying ‘NO’, I should have convinced them to wait for 1-2 weeks so that we could hire more writers and deliver the content. 5. Don't Expect Results From Day One I expected the writers to write awesome content from day one. I think this was the biggest mistake I ever made. No writer can judge or understand the exact data you are looking for in content. I assigned them sample titles and expected them to write an EPIC piece from day one. It didn't happen and I started blaming the writers. Later, I found out that it was a flaw in myself. My system. I was not teaching them how to write awesome content, and further, I failed them to give the right instructions. So, always teach your team first, give them a few days to learn what you need, and soon enough, you will have awesome people working with you. 6. Hiring a Virtual Team is Difficult Running a virtual team is extremely difficult. They work in their own comfort zone, they reply when they want to, and they don't give a shit about your deadlines. If you want to run an online business with a virtual team, make sure you set rules and create contracts. Hire the best people and explain your guidelines. Ask them to report every day whether they have any work assigned or not. Ultimately, give them deadlines and motivate them to deliver the work before the deadline. ----------------------------------- These are the 6 awesome lessons I learned in the last 6 months.
