If you REALLY want to make a stink of the new year, I recommend doing all of these things. (Totally joking by the way) 1. Buy New Tools New year new you! What better to help you get going on that fitness goal then a new pair of shoes or fancy fitness watch? We call this a false first step. Big marketing says, these shoes will make you fit. No they won’t, but they’ll cost $120. You don’t need new tools to start improve in the area you want to see change. You just need to start. Start doing the thing with the tools you have. And once you’ve proven to yourself that you’re going to show up for 30 days without stopping, then we can talk about the possibility of maybe upgrading some of your gear. 2. Commit to More If you want to achieve your goals in the new year, just commit to doing ALL OF THEM. Why should you have to choose which one you want to focus on? 🤦‍♂️ You can't do it all. Trying to do everything is a great way to end the year having made NO progress. As you think about what you want to accomplish in the coming year, also consider what you may need to un-commit from to give yourself the breathing room needed. Consider the cost of a goal in terms of time, money, emotional, and mental margin. Do you have the margin needed to commit to this goal? If not, can you scale back the goal or create more margin to achieve the goal you want? 3. Stop When it Gets Hard If you feel any resistance in the slightest as you pursue your goals, you should probably just stop. Goals are meant to be easy and achieved while in bed. Implementing change of any kind is going to be a challenge! So why are we surprised when we encounter resistance in our pursuit of making improvements? Plan for resistance, know that it will come. And when you feel the resistance, have a plan for how you are going to keep going. I like to establish a minimal acceptable version of the thing I’m trying to do. Read one page. Floss one tooth. Walk for one minute. Eat one carrot. Whatever the ridiculously easy version is of the thing you’re trying to do. As James Clears says, "Never miss twice." 4. Go it Alone Your odds of success will dramatically increase by going it alone and isolating from others in the process. FALSE! We need community in the journey of living a focused life. I need to be inspired by others. I need to be pushed by others. I need to learn from others. I need to be known by others. I need to have fun with others. I need to celebrate milestones with others. I need to be held accountable by other. The odds of success dramatically improve when we engage our goals in the context of community. . . . . In summary... - Get started with what you have. New gear isn't going to magically transform you. - Commit to one or two things, and build momentum. You may need to un-conmmit from some things to create margin (breathing room) for the areas you want to focus on. - Know that your pursuit of change is going to be resisted and make a plan for how you can keep going when it gets tough. - Seek out community that will help inspire and encourge you along the way. Accountability is a key component to following through on your goals.
