Our Haitian brothers and sisters are seeking refuge. TX’s Gov Abbott is answering with violent, mass deportation. Our Haitian brothers and sisters are seeking refuge. TX’s Gov Abbott is answering with violent, mass deportation. What we’re seeing along the southern border is nothing short of a humanitarian disaster. As thousands of asylum seekers from Haiti and elsewhere wait out their asylum proceedings under unlivable conditions, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken the extraordinary step of dispatching the National Guard and exceeding his authority to further militarize our borders. The images of U.S. Border Patrol agents riding horseback, whipping and caging Black asylum seekers, invoke a long and disturbing history of slavery -- one whose legacy lives on through unconscionable acts of racial violence just like this. President Biden cannot "restore the soul of America" as he allows his agencies to replicate the original sin which plagues that damaged soul. We stand with organizations like[Black Alliance for Just Immigration]( the[Haitian Bridge Alliance]( and Black-led grassroots groups in Texas who are providing direct support to those on the ground in Del Rio. And we join in their demands that President Biden immediately stop deportations and follow through on the established process for protecting refugees. Black voters did not risk our lives in order to put President Biden in power only to see him continue the racist immigration and asylum policies of his predecessor. [Read Our Statement]( Calling All HBCU Students! As students return to school this fall in the wake of rampant voter suppression and racial injustice across the country, we call on young people to get in “good trouble” with us and continue to lead the way in the fight for change. America’s HBCUs are hotbeds of talent and innovation, producing some of the great change-makers of the 20th and 21st centuries. By providing resources and support to students as they organize, engage and call on campus leaders to divest from corporations that don’t have our best interest at heart. Heading into the new school year and homecoming season, BVM will be announcing a multi-pronged campaign to work with HBCUs to carry on the great tradition of Black youth-led organizing. From voter engagement and civil disobedience, to holding corporations accountable and calling for student debt relief, this effort will help to inspire and engage the next generation of student activists. [Get Involved]( BVM Has Gone International: Watch LaTosha at The Budapest Forum Last week, we told you about our co-founder, LaTosha Brown’s participation at the inaugural [Budapest Forum](. BVM is eager to continue our work in the Lone Star state to meet this need. As we expand our work in Texas, we’re looking to Texans to let us know what they need! Our Resource Campaign is designed to get important resources and information in the hands of Texans across the state. As a first step, we’re releasing a survey as a means to identify the folks and communities where resources are needed. Texans - help us out by completing this survey! [Take The Survey]( Invest In Black Voting Power When you donate to BVM, you are powering the movement of our 300 grassroots partner organizations in 15 states.
