Yesterday, the Texas state legislature passed SB1, one of the most restrictive voter suppression measures in the nation. While not surprising, this move should send a clear message to Congress that voting rights for all Americans need to be protected. Black Voters Matter co-founders, LaTosha Brown and Cliff Albright, just issued the following statement in response to this latest and devastating development: âAfter months of protest from activists, experts, constituents, and their own colleagues railing against Senate Bill 1, Texas Republicans have brushed off the demands of millions of Texans and approved the most restrictive voter suppression bill in the nation. We had folks from all walks of life coming together to listen, to speak, to march, to dance and - most importantly - to demand action from elected officials. Speakers from dozens of organizations took to the stage to call attendees and viewers across the country to stand up for our rights by making some good and necessary trouble. [Learn More]( A Multi-Generational March at Howard University It wasnât just going down at the Lincoln Memorial in DC this weekend - BVMâs coalition of freedom fighters was working across the district to call folks to action! On Sunday, BVM took to Howard University to join HBCU students and alumni in the HBCU March of the Generation. The march was focused on bringing together multiple generations of Black folks for a peaceful protest that called attention to the many issues facing Black and Brown communities today. [Watch Video]( Come Rock With BVM At Made in America Festival BVM will be at Phillyâs Made In America festival this year as part of the Cause Village, the festivalâs philanthropic footprint and hub for social action. The Cause Village hosts dozens of charitable and activist organizations representing diverse focuses from education, social welfare, voter registration, animal welfare, hunger, homelessness, arts and culture, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, social justice and civil rights. Given that BVM touches many of these issue areas, we will be there loud and proud showing up for Black communities. The festival runs this weekend on September 4th and 5th.
