[VIP Insider]   Happy Friday, Friend!  Thought: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” - Will Durant  Tip: The key to optimizing health may be less about exercising more per se; rather, as Joan Vernikos says in Sitting Kills Moving Heals, “Developing a varied set of habitual non-exercise movements is the most important thing you can do.” In other words, we need to focus on breaking up sedentary periods (e.g., sitting) with more movement baked into our day (e.g., set an alarm to go off every 30 minutes and MOVE). Some examples from Vernikos include stretching, standing up from a seated position, standing and walking tall, going for a short walk every hour, shifting your weight while you work, fidgeting, going up (and down) stairs, parking farther away, carrying groceries (instead of a cart) and more. What else can you think of?  Encouragement: Russ Harris says, “The actions of confidence come first; the feelings of confidence come later.” Or, as Dr. Rob Gilbert says, “Put the body in motion, and the emotions will follow.” In other words, get moving; take action!   1. Favorite Recipe We Tried This Week [Homemade Hot Chocolate: You Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Marshmallows]( Few things warm the body and soul like a delicious mug of hot chocolate. Most Popular Blog Article This Week February is American Heart Month, and while our circulatory health should always be top of mind, raising awareness about cardiovascular health is imperative, as heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. This year, the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention is shining the light on hypertension (i.e., high blood pressure), a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Unlike many other variables we often equate with heart health, blood pressure is simple and convenient to measure, so you can see if your self-care efforts are working. Make A Wish® [Make A Wish®] On May 29, 2019, when Parker was just 2 years old, his family heard the words no parent ever wants to hear: “Your child has cancer.” Parker’s family will never forget that day, but thanks to Make-A-Wish, May 29 is now an anniversary tied to happy memories – it’s the day his wish was granted!  Everyone involved in granting Parker’s wish gathered in his backyard to surprise him with his new playset. “This wish means that we are finally able to let Parker play at the park,” said Parker’s mom, Chelci. “It’s always been one of his favorite things to do. When he got diagnosed with leukemia, we couldn’t let him play at the public parks with all the germs. Now, any time Parker wants to play at the park, we can just take him outside to the backyard.” It's wish stories like this one that help to remind us of all the impact we are making together with Make-A-Wish. These children need us, and thanks to you and your support, we’ve donated over $2,000,000 to Make-A-Wish, helping grant 223 wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.   8.
