Also: Why female friendships are the cutest. [View in browser](=.p7HlttrJ-tRG3rJTqWZC9PiJNBb8jT7rU4-Q34d_KsM) [Zikoko Daily] 15 March, 2024 Hey . Depending on when you get this newsletter, just know it took almost the whole day to send it to you. Did the internet wahala reach your side? I heard it’s because of [fibre cuts](=.JqPVziKlodXrQzp0hZx_y0UCnd_u1OUHlr3VHMBY8AA), but it’s killing me that I can’t access most things. I’m this close to entering the forest and studying the leaves to pass time. 😭 Tife Editor In This Letter: - 1 [5 Nigerians earning >₦700k open up about the lives they can afford](=.7sZpF8-5WbcIua-sKUbzC_CIh6mVQPYV3JtOoNNgA8c) - 2 [7 Nigerian women on the most thoughtful gift they’ve received from friends](=.2Tw8-Bw0MNw5bGi8h29VpaEgyJR3_lZiXkjmTxUEBiM) - 3 [7 young muslims on navigating the demands of Ramadan](=.oeJ-JpwKn04GWWWPm07pREbfv_FuqLpaeMn2e8p4b7s) SHORT READS Natural Hair Palava =.CeyZj_GWUi45BETcftrKmWYFEDIv1lketdH2dwj9IhE “Am I the only one who finds it weird that most Nigerian hairdressers don’t know how to handle natural hair? Before you continue reading, it’s important that you know two things about me: first, I love my hair. I can spend hours at a stretch detangling it just so I don’t damage the texture; a lazy naturalista I am not. Second, and maybe because of the first, I swore off Nigerian hairdressers sometime in November of 2022 because, kilode? What’s with all the tugging and dragging and cutting? What’s with all the pain? But recently, I forgot about my stance — maybe the thought of sitting in front of a mirror to navigate twists on a hot Sunday afternoon seemed unbearable — and found myself walking excitedly to the hair salon across my estate — a lamb to the proverbial slaughter. It didn’t take long for my amnesia to fade. By the time the woman had parted my hair into four sections, my entire scalp was screaming in pain. I tried to remain calm. Perhaps the pain would subside when she started twisting. Omo! I was wrong. This woman tugged my hair like she was a professional trained for tug-of-war and not hairstyling. When I tried to tell her to take it easy because my hair did nothing to offend her, she responded, “Are you the only customer in my shop. Abi emi o ni sun lori irun rẹ loni?” I didn’t point out that her salon was empty because I didn’t want to make her angrier, abeg. Neither did I remind her that I wasn’t a mannequin. I just sat there, anger bubbling inside, as she combed and tugged, tugged and combed, scattering any coherent thought in my brain. When I vented to my family later, my sister asked me to "calm down nah", while my brother — ever the joker— told me to "just cut your hair". It wasn’t until my mum asked, “But why can’t Nigerian hairstylists learn how to make natural hair?” that I realised why I was angry; it feels like a betrayal when the people you should entrust yourself to don’t even know what to do with you. The point is I’ve sworn off hairstylists again. Keep me in your prayers so I never forget.” — Chidera. Your story could be the next one featured here. Whether it’s about a case of mistaken identity, someone stealing your wig in a danfo, or the weirdest experience you’ve ever had, we want to read it. We decided to go straight for the facts, so we asked some Nigerians who earn that much to tell us about the life they can afford on that salary. [What they said](=.aFYdR52Keupw1U582TevIYLxZdv4tZaaNGwtC3rRJto) --------------------------------------------------------------- Female friendships are the cutest Forget whatever you heard about female friendships, women also have “doings”. We asked some to share the most thoughtful gift they’ve received from a female friend, and their responses were so sweet. You might need an handkerchief for this one. Fasting for 12 hours sounds pretty straightforward in theory, but fasting isn't the only thing that happens during Ramadan. You literally have to be holy, and according to these Nigerians, it’s not the easiest thing in the world.
